What are DJs doing when they

are twisting the little knobs right before they drop a big beat?

Blowing their wad....

Posted by JD8180 on Jan-05-2008 05:16:

they may be using effects and twisting the effects knob.

maybe, I'm not sure if they are doing that or playing around with the eq's......I'm starting to get into DJing and was just wondering.

For example at like 1:15 in this vid. (It's Niki Belucci so just watch anyway cause she's hot). She is spinning a knob and then hits play with the other hand, I wanna know what she's doing

lol, nice choice of an example. at 1:15 she's playing with the effects knob. the reason she hits play when the beat starts is because that's when the new phrase of the song started, so she was just cueing up the next track getting it ready to be mixed.

Any idea what the effect is? can't tell with my noob ears.

So at this point, is the other track she just hit the play button for already beatmatched?

Sounds like a reverb effect on what looks to be a DJM-800 mixer.

Yeah, she's already likely beatmatched and is dropping the next track in.

Ask Peter Hook.....he has exceptional knob turning skillz.....

I'd say this is the most likely answer

Also equally is likely is the DJ is getting a BJ and he's lost temporary control of his hands.

I mean seriously, how many times have I seen someone behind the decks tweaking the shit out of something that doesn't even seem to be making the least bit of a difference to the overall sound. They make what they're doing seem so much harder and complex then it really is. I'm not saying this applies to everyone but they look like they're working at the NASA command center.

I think most of the time their not doing fuck all they are just trying to look cool.

Anything that makes it look harder...

lets put it this way... it'll mean less try hard wankers in the business.

Yeah I can't tell what they're actually doing because it's right in the middle of a big breakdown. It's probably just the song, it just sounds and looks cool when you hear the chaos of the buildup and they're twisting shit, and then the beat hits when they press another button......but as it turns out, it looks like that has nothing to do with it either because they're just starting the other queued up track

Here is the master of looking like you're doing something when in reality you're doing sweet f-all.

Most of the time I'm pumping the gain and the filter in time with the beat or I'm switching both channels simultaneously from highpass to lowpass in time for a cut & paste type of mix. Etc...

hahahahaah, I think he's using the eq's as handles to pelvic thrust

I think he's just trying to do a little workout to lose some weight while he DJ's. Hence all the 'pelvic thrusts' and tai-bo style movements.
