Spirit Of '95 [Vintage Epic/Progressive House]

It may be a bit surprising to see me post a mix here (then again, you might not care) because I'm hardly a regular in this forum and this is the first time I've ever posted a mix here. I usually only make mixes for my own amusement.

However, I thought I'd share this one with you. It's a mix of old school epic house, the kind of thing Sasha and Digweed were playing around 1995- hence the title. This is for everyone who misses the days when progressive house could be epic and euphoric. A lot of these tracks are probably familiar to some people, but the whole "epic house" phase of progressive's history has largely been swept under the carpet and forgotten about now. I hope you enjoy it; I'm not much of a DJ but hopefully my mixing isn't too bad.

Spirit of '95 [Vintage Epic House]
Tracklist:

1. Way Out West - Domination (Mururoa Mix)
2. Blue Amazon - The Runner
3. Tenth Chapter - Wired
4. Up Yer Ronson - Lost In Love (Sasha Remix)
5. Tilt - I Dream (Casa De Angeles Remix)
6. Grace - Not Over Yet (BT's "Spirit of Grace" Remix)
7. Billie Ray Martin - Your Loving Arms (Brothers In Rhythm Remix)
8. BT & Vincent Covello - Loving You More (BT's "Garden Of Ima" Dub)
9. Blue Amazon - And Then The Rain Falls (Javelin Remix)
10. BT - Divinity

downloading just to determine whether your miksing is as bad as your prose.

THIS I shall download.

This mix is great! Excellent track selection, never a dull moment. I'm definitely gonna be listening to this for awhile... and while you're at it, make another mix!

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Jan-08-2008 16:21:

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'd make another mix if I could find the tracks, but that may take some time. I don't collect vinyl, and this stuff can be tough to find on CD.

Posted by flynno on Jan-08-2008 17:04:

Please sir can we have some more. Damn nice tracks you got here bro. I'm enjoying this very much. Thanks for sharing and I hope as hell that you got some more classics in your box. Cheers. Flynno

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Jan-09-2008 22:05:

Thanks. If I get enough requests for a follow-up, I'll put some serious effort into finding enough tracks for another mix.

Anyone else who listened, tell me what you thought. Don't be afraid to hurt my feelings if you don't like it- I wanted to share this mix so people could hear the music.

You and I have exactly the same taste in music, nothing better than the epic/progressive house sash and digweed spun in the mid 90s.

Have you got any recommendations in the genre? I'm always looking out for more stuff like this.

Getting in.

If you have not listened to john digweed's 1995 essential mix, do it now. I like that mix better than any sasha mix during that time. I can't provide a link for you to download, but since its an essential mix you should be able to find it somewhere like mixingbowl.org.

i'd also recommend Sasha live at Temple of Love, 1993. Find it on mixingbowl.org, absolute killer set with amazing tracks you probably can't find anywhere.

Heh. I just came online and had a PM from IpLaYWiTLiGhTs with a link to this set in, from when I'd requested it ages ago. It was meant to be!

\o/ One of my favorites

Nicely done. The attention and effort that went into 10min+ epic house productions makes most of today's "DJ tools" seem so sad by comparison.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Jan-13-2008 03:47:

Definitely. My aim is to keep alive the ethos and the emotional aesthetics of this kind of music, which seem to be rapidly vanishing into the sands of time.

My long-term aim is to actually produce some music with this philosophy, although that's realistically just a pipe dream at present. In the meantime, the least I can do is make threads, make mixes and keep playing it to anyone who'll listen.

Re-bumpbumpbump. I fucking love this mix. Listened to it multiple times at work this week and it helped keep me sane. We need more good shit like this. Any CD mixes from back then you recommend that are somewhere along the lines of your mix?

Renaissance: The Mix Collection Part 2, although I haven't actually listened to it yet.

Here's the link for that Digweed Essential Mix: [[ LINK REMOVED ]]

I'd also recommend Sasha's Essential Mix from 21/5/95: I used a couple of the same tracks he played in that set.

Nice, I had Sasha & Digweed's 1st Renaissance Mix Collection which I loved. I didn't know that Digweed actually made the 2nd Mix Collection so I'll definitely try to check that one out. Already got the 95 EM which is an awesome set. I'll def check out Digweed's EM when I get home tonight.

Anyway, time to put your mix back on.. i love this stuff

Yeah, Renaissance were one of the clubs that championed this sound in the mid-90s, along with other Northern clubs like Up Yer Ronson. I've heard this epic progressive sound described as "Northern House" because it was very popular in the North of England. Blue Amazon are from Huddersfield, which is where I'm living now, so I have a direct cultural connection with this stuff: it's the clubbing heritage of my region.

Posted by spc on Jan-16-2008 14:35:

I'm gonna keep bumping this thread for awhile lol. I'm listening to Digweed's 95 EM you linked right now and I absolutely love it! Sasha & Maria - Be As One just started getting mixed in and I started spazzing out since it's one of my favorite vocal trance tunes. (On a sidenote I wonder how much of a hand BT had in this production) Anyway if I keep finding more stuff similar to this, I might end up making an "epic house" mix too.

I need something different right now and this looks like it will fit the bill quite nicely.

Back with thoughts in an hour or so.

Well I'm just having a chance now to sit down and spout some nonsense about this set, but it was really a treat to listen to. I wasn't too familiar with many of the tunes you used (I may have heard about half of them more than a handful of times), but the flow of the first two tracks was just the mood I needed to get some stuff done this morning.

You should post more sets - your posts in MD say you've got good taste and the programming of this says you know how create a coherent set.

Thanks. I'm glad to see you praising it, because you don't hand out praise lightly.

I don't post sets because I don't consider what I do proper DJing, in particular when it comes to buying music. I don't really trawl to find individual tracks and develop a unique style. I don't have that mindset. Musically (although not technically), this set is a homage to Sasha and Digweed circa 1995, and I've not hidden that.

I'm thinking about making a set of classic progressive house from the 92/93 Leftfield/Underworld/Spooky/Fluke school, and I might post that here, but classics sets are all about commemorating a musical style rather than trying to define your own. A DJ in the proper sense of the word, like what you do, deserves celebrating for their devotion to discovering music, and I simply don't feel I engage with music in that way.

big +1 for including "your loving arms (Brother in rhythm remix)" in this mix, absolute classic mid 90s tune

once again, epic house ftw
