Dunno Strange Battery skipping problem

I've been using Battery 3 on Logic 5.5 Platinum (PC) and I've noticed a strange problem when I play longer samples with it such as 3-second loops or long claps. What happens is the samples will get skipped from time to time. So for example, if i have a kick sample (short, like 1 second) and a long ride cymbal sample (like 2.5 seconds) in this pattern:

kick kick kick kick
cym cym cym cym

what i'll hear on some bars is

kick kick kick kick
cym cym ... cym

It's as if Battery is buffering or something when I use longer samples? I have 1GB of RAM and I have no problems loading waaay longer samples into other samplers (like Logic's own ESX), but battery gives me this weird skipping problem. Anyone ever encounter this?

Are you sure that neither the kick nor cymbal are assigned to a voice group? That will make one of the sounds cut short when another sound is triggered.

No problem. A voice group, sometimes called a choke group, allows you to have the output of one cell cut off the output from another cell - it's usually used for hihats so that when you play an open hihat followed by a closed hihat, the closed hihat cuts off open hihat (i.e., rather than ringing) just as a real hihat pattern would. If you click on the Setup tab in Battery, you'll see the Voice Group assignment window in the upper left-hand corner of the Setup box. Click on the cells that are assigned to the kick and cymbal patterns and look at the Voice Group designation; if they are assigned to the same group (or the same group as another cell), then that's probably the problem - one sample is cutting off the other. If they aren't assigned to the same Voice Group, then something else is causing the problem. Good luck!

I will try this at home tonight, thanks a lot!

Battery also has a voice limit as well, not sure if thats the correct term.
If you look in the top right of the battery window, just under the main volume peak meter, it should say 0/32, keep an eye on this when you play your track, if it gets close to 32/32, it might start skipping, just increase this value and see if the skipping disappears.....

So I checked out my battery setup after work last night and found that I wasn't even using voice groups. Then I let battery play while watching the little CPU load indicator on it carefully. Looks like my suspicions were right ... every time i'd hear a skipped percussion hit, the CPU icon flashed red.

Kind of ridiculous, I mean I'm running logic 5.5, a few simple instances of the ESX sampler, and have the virus TI connected. My laptop has a gig of ram and ~2ghz of CPU speed (centrino). Oh well, I guess I'll have to downgrade to a less hoggy drum VST.

Hmmm...sorry to hear that you're still having problems, but I wouldn't give up on B3 just yet. I run B3, Stylux RMX, Polar TI, and typically 4-10 other soft synths in virtually every project and don't have any problem with CPU. B3 is actually pretty light on the CPU, because it loads the samples into your computer's RAM and therefore doesn't require much processing power. I suggest checking the usual latency, buffer, etc. settings to see if that is the problem. Also, you may want to search/post your issue on the NI forums. Good luck!

What version of Battery 3 are you on? v3.0.3 just came out not too long ago. You should try updating to that.
