N. Hollywood Fire Injures Civilian, 4 Firefighters
NORTH HOLLYWOOD (CBS) ― Four firefighters and another person were injured on Monday in a fire that burned through the roof of a two-story commercial building in North Hollywood, authorities said. None of the injuries were serious.
Firefighters sent to the 5300 block of North Lankershim Boulevard about 7:15 a.m. found the fire burning between floors and in the attic area, said Ron Myers of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
About 8 a.m., firefighters determined that it was too dangerous to battle the flames from inside the building and went into a "defensive mode" outside the structure, Myers said, but they re-entered the building around 8:30 a.m.
The Bank, described as "an upscale restaurant/night club with comedy shows, live music and great food" featuring jazz, blues and rock, was built in a "vintage brick bank building that was built in 1926."
A local news network reports that the building was designed by the same architect as Union Station.
Four firefighters suffered minor smoke inhalation and were transported for hospital treatment, as was a fifth person, who suffered minor smoke inhalation and burns, Myers said.
Although "there was a significant amount of damage," the fire did not gut the structure, Myers said.
There was damage to the roof and the second floor and extensive water damage to the first floor and basement, Myers said.
"The owner was pleased the building did not suffer nearly the damage it could have, although the nightclub operators were disappointed because they lost so much," Myers said.
The cause of the blaze, which was extinguished by 9:30 a.m., was still under investigation and an exact tally of the damage had not been completed late this afternoon, Myers said.
