2008 Darwin Award Nominees

This thread is dedicated to those people who evolution should probably have stopped from being born in the first place.

My first candidate:

Man Accused Of Accidentally Stabbing Himself While Shoplifting Hunting Knives
Wednesday January 9, 2008
CityNews.ca Staff
Cops accuse a thief of not being the sharpest tool in the shed. In fact, they say his alleged loot was razor sharp - but he wasn't.

Police in Grand Rapids, Michigan (top left) say a man went into a superstore on Monday night and stole about $300 worth of hunting knives, which he allegedly secreted in the waistband of his pants. But this klutzy would-be robber didn't exactly make the perfect getaway.

He was confronted by suspicious store personnel and then tripped and fell while attempting to flee. You can guess what happened next. The suspect wound up stabbing himself in the stomach.

"I saw a man laying down on the mat by the carts, a knife by him with blood on the full blade of the knife," shopper Heather Dodd told a local TV station. "It was not a dull kitchen knife or a sharp butcher's knife, it was somewhere in between.

"Someone was holding him down so I just walked around him, grabbed my cart, made sure everything was OK and got out of the way."

The suspect, who has a record of similar crimes, suffered wounds that aren't life threatening. He remains in hospital, facing a misdemeanour shoplifting charge.

There's no word on when he may be cut loose.

But the injuries weren't life-threatening? He can't win a Darwin award if he's still alive and able to reproduce.

This doesn't qualify for a Darwin, but still made me laugh: http://www.thestar.com/article/291077

Teens Charged in 'Mortal Kombat' Death

Dec 19, 2007

JOHNSTOWN, Colo. (AP) Two teens have been charged with killing the 7-year-old sister of one of them by beating her with imitations of moves from the "Mortal Kombat" video game, prosecutors said.

Lamar Roberts, 17, and Heather Trujillo, 16, were charged as adults on one count each of felony child abuse causing death, state prosecutor Robert Miller said in court documents released Wednesday and filed a day earlier.

According to a police affidavit, the teens were baby-sitting Trujillo's half-sister, Zoe Garcia, on Dec. 6 while the girl's mother was at work. Zoe lost consciousness and stopped breathing after the teens hit, kicked and body-slammed her, imitating moves used in the video game, the document said.

Trujillo and Roberts tried reviving the girl by putting her under running water and attempting CPR before they called her mother and 911, the affidavits stated. The girl died at a hospital.

An autopsy showed she had a broken wrist, more than 20 bruises, swelling of the brain, and bleeding in her neck muscles and under her spine, the affidavits said.

There were no listed phone numbers in the Weld County directory for either Roberts' mother, Linda Clark, or Trujillo's, Dana Trujillo. Sheriff's spokeswoman Margie Martinez said late Wednesday that she did not know whether either teen had an attorney. The teens were being held at the Weld County jail but were not permitted to accept phone calls, Martinez said.

Roberts said he was downstairs playing video games while the sisters wrestled upstairs, police said. But a witness quoted in the affidavit said Roberts told her he had kicked the girl.

The witness told police that Roberts said Zoe had told them to stop wrestling. According to the affidavit, when the witness asked why they didn't stop, he responded, "I don't know; I was drunk."

If convicted, the teens could be sentenced to 48 years in prison.

Man's Attempt To Wave At Two Attractive Young Women May Cost Him His Left Arm
Monday January 14, 2008
CityNews.ca Staff
It's an all too common practice in the world when a guy in a car sees an attractive woman - they honk the horn, make some often provocative comment or gesture at them. One man in Australia now certainly wishes he'd picked the former two options.

He was a passenger in a pick-up truck this weekend when he saw two lovely young ladies at a car wash. He rolled down the window and began waving at them. Unfortunately, the driver decided to make a right turn at that exact moment and the flirtatious man didn't see the car coming the other way. As it passed him at a high rate of speed, it hit his arm, nearly severing the limb.

The 20-year-old was rushed to hospital but the damage is so severe, doctors don't think they can save it. "His left arm was partially severed and doctors believe the limb may need to be amputated," police relate.

The accident took place on Sunday in the city of Bunbury (top left), in the western part of the country.
