At least 3 dead in Fla. 50-car pileup

1 hour, 24 minutes ago

LAKELAND, Fla. - About 50 cars crashed on a highway blanketed by fog and smoke from a brush fire Wednesday, and authorities said at least three people were killed.

A stretch of nearly 15 miles of Interstate 4 between Tampa and Orlando was closed by several accidents, including the 50-car pileup. Aerial footage showed the soupy mix of fog and smoke covering the landscape for miles and giving the sky an eerie golden color.

The poor visibility forced rescuers to walk along the closed interstate checking individual vehicles for injured motorists, Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Larry Coggins said. The conditions cleared in late morning, showing mangled, charred trucks and cars pinned underneath some tractor trailers.

I'd be more also worried about what happened in Alabama (it's right under the news article Krypton posted):
quote:

Police: Dad threw 4 children off bridge

BAYOU LA BATRE, Ala. - A man angered after a dispute with his wife confessed to tossing his four young children off a bridge, authorities said Wednesday as they searched murky waters for the bodies.

Lam Luong, 37, who is charged with four counts of capital murder, told authorities Tuesday night that he drove to the Dauphin Island bridge and dropped the children from a span that reaches 80 feet in places, said Detective Scott Rivera.

Luong came to coastal Alabama from Vietnam in 1984 and worked in the commercial fishing industry as a shrimper, Police Chief John Joyner and a relative said. He had argued with his wife, Ngoc Phan, before taking the children, he said.

Missing and presumed dead were 4-month-old Danny Luong; 1-year-old Lindsey Luong; 2-year-old Hannah Luong; and 3-year-old Ryan Phan. Phan is not the man's biological child, but Luong raised him from infancy, authorities said.

Authorities were searching a 100-square-mile area and waters as deep as 55 feet. The search included divers and cadaver dogs in small boats, as well as three helicopters, Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran said.

Joyner said he feared the search of the Intracoastal Waterway below the bridge would be hampered by bad weather and choppy waters. The bridge extends from the mainland to Dauphin Island, which lies between the waterway and the Gulf of Mexico.

The couple lived with Phan's mother at Bayou La Batre, a fishing village with a large Southeast Asian community. Phan's brother-in-law Kam Phengsisomboun, who is from Thailand, said the couple moved back to the area from Hinesville, Ga., only a couple of weeks ago.

They argued Sunday night and again Monday, he said. Luong left the home with two of the children, then later came back for the other two, he said.

The family initially feared the children had been traded to support a drug habit, Phengsisomboun said. Luong had a crack cocaine habit and had spent an insurance settlement from an automobile accident rapidly, he said, and authorities confirmed Luong had a history of drug offenses.

Luong reported the children missing Monday, and told police that a woman who had the children failed to return them, authorities said. Phengsisomboun said he was later told by investigators that a witness had seen someone throw a bundle from the bridge and then saw three children in a nearby car.

Phan, 23, was in seclusion Wednesday morning at her mother's brick home, the front porch cluttered with children's shoes.

Who's Lam Duong?

same exact thing happened just 3 days ago in Wisconsin, but it involved over 100 cars and resulted in only 2 deaths.

Fog doesn't cause crashes, people do

PATRICIA SIMMS and DEBORAH ZIFF

Fog wasn 't the villain -- people were.

In the series of crashes Sunday on Interstate 39-90 that killed two, drivers failed to adjust to changes in visibility, said a State Patrol expert.

"People drove into that crash at 65 and 70 miles an hour, maybe even more, " said Maj. Dan Lonsdorf, director of transportation safety at the state Department of Transportation. "The fog did not cause the crash last night. People cause crashes because of the way they drive, because they fail to adapt to their environment. "

Observed visibility at the Dane County Regional Airport was about 300 feet at noon Sunday and about 700 feet at 2 p.m.

Drivers described hitting a "wall of fog " as they approached the crash site. Experts say fog density can vary significantly in a short stretch.

Still, Lonsdorf said drivers often don 't appreciate how fast they 're driving. "Cars are made better, they 're quieter, they 're designed to protect (motorists) better, " he said. "All of these things make people feel a little more invincible. "

One British study found some people actually speed up when driving in fog, Lonsdorf said. "People in fog fear what 's in front of them, but they also fear what 's behind them, " he said. "... They don 't want anybody coming up behind them and running into them, so they go faster.

"They don 't realize what it takes for them to stop, how violent the crash will be when they are traveling at those kinds of speeds. "

Topography also affects where fog congregates, as it tucks into low elevations or lingers on hills, said Jonathan Martin, chairman of the UW-Madison department of atmospheric and oceanic sciences.

"I ve seen it go from what seems like one-half mile visibility or greater to something one-quarter mile or less within a few dozen of yards, " Martin said.

Lonsdorf has some advice: "Don 't overdrive your vision -- what you can see -- so that, in the event something happens in front of you, you can recognize that and you can stop in time."

Serving in Iraq is statistically safer than driving in America...

Yeah, dang, good thing God arranged it so that you didn't have to use the I-4 at the time of the accident! The people who were involved in it obviously deserved a punishment.

Secretary Peters explained that data released today by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that from 2001-2005, an average of 36 fatalities occurred per day on Americas roadways as a result of crashes involving an alcohol impaired driver. That number increases to 45 per day during the Christmas period and jumps to 54 per day over the New Years holiday, she added.

ratios though...

number of people in the US vs number of US peeps in Iraq

you keep the ratios the same and then i bet iraq is more dangerous..

im sure of it...

54 people out of 300 mil, vs 5 out of 150,000 = iraq much more dangerous

i was there a year and i personally knew 5 people that died... how many people on TA knew even one person killed by a car accident last year?
