Canada: Can I Get a DUI With my Burger?

Police work drive-thrus for DUIs
SURREY, B.C. (CNS) -- Police in this Vancouver-area city have hatched a new plan to crack down on drunk drivers who get the munchies.

Project WULF -- Would you like fries? -- involves putting an officer inside the drive-thru booth of co-operating restaurants.

"Taking a passive observer role, the police officer is able to hear the slurred speech, smell the stale liquor and advise a second officer who then stops the vehicle as it departs," said Surrey RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Roger Morrow.

The project, which began in late 2007 and is expected to continue all year, has already resulted in a number of impaired-driving charges and roadside suspensions.

Morrow said the idea came after police heard innumerable times from drive-thru employees that, "You should be here late at night."

I think this is a great idea since it would crack down on a lot of drunk drivers (or make them eat at Denny's instead), but it does seem a bit intrusive, almost some kind of entrapment maybe? I dunno, I think it's a good idea that I wish would happen in my state.

Isnt that the same as just sitting outside the bar and listening to the people talk and if their speech is slurred stop them?

I know in Georgia it is illegal

They're not in cars.

If you pull up to a drive-thru igoo, you're driving and therefore open to a DWI, what you call a DUI.

Stopping someone with slurred speech in the parking lot, before they untie their dogsled, doesn't give them cause to stop you, you could be going to get your ice fishing pole before you walk home. That's why if you're going to sleep it off in your snow groomer, leave the keys in the trunk so there can be no arguement as to your intention to drive.

We've had those pigs do that at McDonalds and other fast-food places here for a year or two now. I thought it was normal all around Canada, not just here in Edmonton.
