Somethin I Want to Know About Returning TV Shows

So some shows, like late night talk shows are returning to TV, despite the writer's strike. But, if people like John Stewart, Stephan Colbert, Conan, etc. are back on TV making jokes and such, who's writing that stuff?

Any of their staff that are not members of the WGA and are mildly amusing, I imagine.

Letterman has his whole writing staff back as he came to an individual agreement with the WGA.

Stewart said he would be paying his writers with his own checkbook. I don't know about the rest.

Not true.

So maybe it would be possible for me to submit a few jokes of my own?

All of the people you've listed have made careers out of comedy. Hell, O'Brien was a writer for SNL (I think, right?) and The Simpsons. That, plus staff members who aren't part of the WGA as Rob mentioned, would provide for at least some sort of "writing" staff at this point. They're not just a face, they can write their own jokes if they need to.

Returning to late-night television Monday for the first time since the Writers Guild of America strike forced them off the air in November, Stewart and fellow Comedy Central fake-news purveyor Stephen Colbert had to face the cameras (and the audience) without their writing staffs.

Oh, ok. I guess I was out of date.

Right, but it doesn't really seem possible that they alone would be able to write a continuous series of new epsiodes, even with the help of non-writing staff.

There was a large rumor about it, however as Stewart does not own the Daily Show, he was not free to engage in negotiations to get his writers back (conversely, because Letterman and not ABC owns "The Late Show" he was able to come to his own agreement to get his writers back).

There was a rumor about Stewart paying his writers that made the rounds, but his publicist quickly denied that was happening.

Well, have you watched the latest episodes of O'Briens show? It's obvious that he's not able to provide the same amount of humor as usual, and as a result has resorted to filming random things and trying to be funny on his own. It has worked alright for him so far.

Posted by RJT on Jan-10-2008 22:06:

Yeah - all of the shows that have come back that I've caught have felt pretty dicey as far as quality.

The Daily Show and Colbert Report in particular have, at times, seemed to struggle.

True, I guess it's a little different with the talk shows, but when I was watching the Daily Show, I noticed that the jokes were very similar to how they were when they did have writers.

Really? His audience doesn't seem to agree - the amount of awkward silences after jokes has been a bit odd for me to see.

i cant believe letterman pays somebody for his material. talk about getting ripped off.

They're definitely not as on-point as they were, and of course are lacking the sketches and "correspondants", but the general satire and the way they poke fun at things seems to still be there.

Yeah - I thought they were as funny as ever, but it was weird to not hear such raucous laughter from the audience as there usually is.

Stewart also seems to be making jokes since he got back that are, at times, over his audience head. They're funny if you know what he's talking about, but it's clear he loses about half the audience each time he tries one out.

That's why I've tried to steer clear of watching The Daily Show or The Colbert Report. Both of those shows seem to rely a lot more on writers than late-night talk shows do. I've been surprised at how much I've actually enjoyed Conan over the last week because he's always been someone who is good at being randomly hilarious, and that's great for when you lack writers. Colbert and Stewart on the other hand, not so much.

*shrug*

conan has gone totally apeshit without the writers and so far it's amusing but the wackiness is going to get old real fast if the strike continues.

leno has been his usual unfunny self with substandard bookings reflecting the strike most conspicuously. colbert and stewart are struggling.

letterman rocks as always.
