013 Windmill Sessions Jan2008

A new year dawns....

Windmill Sessions returns for 2008 with more chilled, thoughtful melodic sets (and new picture!). This set is perhaps a little darker in tone than previous work overall, and I would love to hear any opinions guys! Roll on the track descriptions...

Miika Kuisma-Where Am I
Miika Kuisma-Trying My New Wings
11.8-Sunrise
Micah-Greenstone
Stereok-Deep Desire (arthur deep erised mix)
Cream Sound-New Friday (mango remix)
Cbass+Mikobene-Terens Ferenz
Christian Paduraru-Express Yourself (michael+levan remix)
The Defender Droids-Boxing Day
Masque-Foresta
Ariel Curtis-Escape Of Sound (michael+levan remix)
Ferdy+Matt Van Wyk-I Am Guilty
4Mal ft. Gliss-Time Is Burning
Shifted Reality-Fuerte (solesystem remix)
James Zabiela-Perseverance

Miika Kuisma-Where Am I
Dark ambience greets the listener, slowly melodic whispers reveal themselves before melting away once more...
Miika Kuisma-Trying My New Wings
Distinctive atmospheric breakbeat, with a stirring and enigmatic melodic lead. Wonderful work from Kuisma's new album.
11.8-Sunrise
After the ominous opening the set lightens with the aptly named "Sunrise", as the warm melodious air washes over. Bouncey and blissful is how I'd describe this!
Micah-Greenstone
From the blissful melodies to the melancholic. "Greenstone" entices the listener with its guitar licks and deep atmosphere.
Stereok-Deep Desire (arthur deep erised mix)
Mysterious and beautiful, a reductive track that produces the goods after many a listen. A good precurssor to the next track also.
Cream Sound-New Friday (mango remix)
The first genuinely "happy" track of the mix synth-stabs rhythmically into being. The cut-up vocals are interspersed beautifully and, well, its a Mango production, need I say more!
Cbass+Mikobene-Terens Ferenz
From light to dark, the transition to the deeper, more driving section begins now. A perculiar track which carries the listener along its darkening path with wobbling melodies and distinctive percussion.
Christian Paduraru-Express Yourself (michael+levan remix)
Driving, atmospheric prog slowly reveals itself. Minimal in its delivery, but powerful in its impact with lovely layered melodic hints and ambience.
The Defender Droids-Boxing Day
Feet-moving basslines announce the arrival of this track. A great sense of atmosphere is conveyed throughout, with the first mildly-euphoric moment as the tune drops after a moving break.
Masque-Foresta
What sounds like classic old-skool sounding driving prog now. Technical competence is exhibited by Masque as he creates something emotional, funky, atmospheric and danceable.
Ariel Curtis-Escape Of Sound (michael+levan remix)
The pace continues as more dark, progressive is revealed, under-pinned by the hinted promise of trancy melodies.
Ferdy+Matt Van Wyk-I Am Guilty
Deep, smooth progressive trance begins your journey out of the darkness. Samlped vocals allow recognition while the melodies consume all after the break.
4Mal ft. Gliss-Time Is Burning
Big distinctive bass runs alongside thoughtful vocals as the set gears up for its conclusion with bucketloads of energy.
Shifted Reality-Fuerte (solesystem remix)
Retro latin-influenced throbbing sparkly trance, or something akin!
James Zabiela-Perseverance
A genuinely refreshing track to bring the mix to its culmination. You are able to lose yourself in this one as it builds to a suitably epic conclusion.

Wow. Mint set, mate. I'll get a proper review up soon enough, but it will probably come this weekend. As always, this is quality. Shifted Reality-Fuerte (solesystem remix) is just I've GOT to get a set of CDJs. I can't find this kind of stuff on vinyl, I'm afraid.

Apparently Dj Rebel is you man for that, though he favours the treble rather than the bass

Wicked mate, can't wait for your excellent reviews as always!

Its all about the digital age now I'm afraid, especially when concerned with "quality" music rather than the stuff from the big labels. Maybe you should play around with ableton?

Thanks a lot boss!

In regards to the Deep Desire track, its one that really gets under your skin for me without being immediately apparent. Loving all of Arthur Deep's work currently, SO much talent coming out of Eastern Europe.

Cheers for taking the time to d/load and for the feedback.

Cool Hope you like it.

The Kuisma tracks aren't typical Kuisma trance though! More atmospheric-chill really, still its great work from a brilliant album...

I love the opening track here! Very peaceful and beautiful. This reminds me of watching a slow sunrise by myself in an isolated place or, quite the opposite, sitting alone in the rain somewhere both equally pleasant, though. The lead in Trying My New Wings is nice. Tracks like this make me wish I could mix breaks. I really need to take the time to learn. Sunrise is rich and warm, and I like how you can hear the swirls from Trying My New Wings slowly fading into the background in Sunrise. Greenstone comes in next with a solid, punchy kick. The guitar riff in the breakdown is somber and introspective. Perfect for pausing to reflect at the end of a long, exhausting day, perhaps. Nice mix into the Arthur Deep treatment of Deep Desire! Love the little echoing jingle on this melody sounds almost like a xylophone or something similar. New Friday slips up before you know it. Nice, smooth mix there! The Mango treatment is lush, as always. I dont think Ive heard a Mango track Ive disliked. The vocals combined with the sythn stabs are simply incredible. Youre correct this is a very happy track. Another smooth mix into Terens Ferenz. Your description of this track is right on wobbling melody that sort of takes you out to space then reels you back in! A nice combination of drive + atmosphere in this track. I missed the mix into Express Yourself the first time around. I had to go back and locate it. It chugs along rhythmically until its brief break, then it really turns into a monster of a tune! Boxing Day slides in next with that smooth bass line and tingling melody. This one really gets you moving. Another smooth transition into Foresta, which is indeed a little funky. The lead is one of those twangy melodies, and it works well. The fade into Escape of Sound is nice, and this track is darker just like you said. Though darker, the trancier melody and breakdown work well together. This track reminds me of driving through a city at night, as crazy as that might sound. Another seamless mix and were into I Am Guilty. The melody is very familiar, but I cant quite place it. It almost reminds me of something Solarstone would produce. It simply explodes after the break! Youre taking us towards peak time now, good sir. Time is Burning has that distinctive 4Mal touch nice work on the bass line in this track, and the guitar sounding breakdown is pleasant as well. Now were into the track of the mix for me Fuerte. Oh my god. One word sums up this gem hypnotic. I live for this kind of track. I checked out Beatport, and the Solesystem treatment is by far the best. Thank you for introducing me to this. What a tune! Massive, massive, massive. I must confess that I am not that familiar with Zabiela, but this closer is perfect. Totally get lost in it. Okay, Im old and tired. Good night to all.

Stunning review once again Ryan mate! Almost enjoy reading your thoughts more than the mix itself

I think you have summed up better than I could what the mix and specifically, the tracks, mean when listened to in deep immersion and contemplation. For me this type of music takes a degree of isolation and reflection to fully feel the emotion inherent within. So happy that other folks take the time to go "deep"!

Agree whole-heartedly with all your track descriptions too mate, seems we have very similar responses to them. As for the "Fuerte" track, well its definitely got something about it, a certain hypnotic quality for sure. For me though it evokes a lot of nostalgic memories of trance in my formative years, and that really stirs my soul. Solesystem have produced a few good tracks, long may it continue.
As aside note about the Zabiela track- I'm not his biggest fan usually, hate the whole glitchy tom-foolery electronic music myself, but "Perserverance" is a different kettle of fish altogether, been hooked on it since the first listen! I doff my cap to the man.

Glad you enjoyed it so much sir, certainly gave it my all to whack out a great mix for the new year and it seemed to come together very fluently. See ya next month
