There Will Be Blood

Anyone seen this?

Lemme start by saying I'm a huge Paul Thomas Anderson (PTA) fan. Boogie Nights is, in my opinion, Paul's best work followed closely by Punch Drunk Love and then Magnolias.

Daniel Day-Lewis is, as usual, incredible. This guy is just a God when it comes to character and line delivery. What surprised me the most was Paul Dano, whom some of you might know as one of the loser sidekicks in "Girl Next Door." You'd imagine any actor next to Day-Lewis would be outstaged but Dano holds his ground and delivers a great performance. I'm hoping he gets a nomination in the supporting category for this years Oscars.

Acting and cinematography are the true star of this film...

I found the ending lacked resolution but I guess you'll have to see it to decide for yourself. Some say this film brought PTA closer to Altman's style but I completely disagree. "There Will be Blood" resembled a new age Kubrick film. A study of greed, emotions, family and how far some will go to make it in this world. Moral allegories at it's finest.

The ending wasn't to my liking but the comparison to Kubrick has the finale make sense in MY mind. Kubrick had this way of finishing a film before the audience could expect it. Think of "2001" or "Clockwork Orange." Actually, the film is very similar to "Clockwork" in many ways. An exploration into the mind and a great metaphor for our insatiable thirst of oil.

For art house fans, yes. For the general public... I don't know. The film is an hour too long and the ending draws on too long for a commercial success.

HOW ABOUT YOU MOFOS?

I just put on Clockwork Orange last night... will definitely try and check this out, thanks for the heads up - oil is always an interesting topic

It's my favorite film of the year and possibly the decade. Day-Lewis gives his best performance to date outstaging himself as Bill the Butcher with a deeper and more sinister role here. PTA is proving to be maybe the best director of his generation with outstanding achievements all around (Magnolia is in my top ten of all time).
I understand where you're coming from with the ending Marcus, but I loved it especially with that line he delivers. The whole scene there was one of the most intense i've seen in a loooooong time and i loved every minute
A bunch of us are going to see it tonight, i'm seeing it again so i'm really curious to see how i feel after a second viewing.
Day-Lewis deserves that Globe and he'll deserve that Oscar when he gets it Dano definately deserves a nom at least (everyone saying Bardem for No Country of Old Men...he was sick but Dano would equally deserve the award).
Also, Anderson needs to win for Best Director. Seriously, this guy is a genius.

Go watch this movie people!

dude it was incredible but i dont think it's the film of the decade...

the film leaves you wanting more... way more... there is no resolution... the movie gives no satisfaction to the viewer other than the fact that its well shot and incredibly well acted...

at one point day-lewis is the films hero and then at another hes a vile monster... i wanted to see this monster die for all the harm he did...SOMETHING OTHER THAN "I'M FINISHEDD!!!!"

The eli killing at the end just didn't make sense!!!

we're left to assume he rots in a prison for the rest of his life? why couldnt we see that?

i love PTA man... and I respect the actors in this film... it was like a beautiful puzzle with awkward matching pieces...

what do you gather after watching the film? what does it leave you with?

Posted by malek on Jan-14-2008 22:57:

You guys can't imagine how pissed I am for still not seeing this movie! Its only at one place in the city and at akward times (see 3 hours movie).

malek might not like that you spoiled the whole ending there hehe, but anyway.

*************SPOILERS BELOW (FOR THE PURISTS)*****************

I don't know how it could of ended any differently.

First off, what I get from the film is a great story about a man who rises from a silver-digging unknown to millionaire madman - i love stories about the effects of power, greed and wealth (Citizen Kane is the obvious comparison and i love that film). Secondly, I see it as a great commentary on today's America (and its president who's out for oil and very religious, no coincidence there i think) and on the kind of people that made America what it is today, who got their hands dirty and cared about nothing but their success. I loved the commentary on religion, how it can just as easily be a device through which one can manipulate and get power like through oil (in this case).
The ending was quite perfect as it closed all the character-arcs and resolved their stories: H.W. became his own man, Eli was exposed for the fraud he always was and finally got what's coming to him (I don't know about you but he was just as selfish and closed-minded as Plainview except he didn't admit to it and he played with people's faith which is worse) and Daniel was left to basically live out the rest of his short life in that mansion. Alone. I doubt he goes to prison, the bland expression on the butler's face seemed like the mess can be taken care of and Plainview's final words are the end, he's finished living his life with people, he's finished what he set out to accomplish: have enough money to get away from everyone and with killing Eli he did because if didn't Eli would keep coming back asking for money, he'd never forget the 5000$ Daniel told him he'd get which the latter didn't want to pay out of sound principles (instead gave the money to his brother, "the true prophet", i loved that).
Anything after that scene would be Plainview living his lonely life as a mad drunk in a mansion or what, follow H.W. to Mexico? That's not the story.

Also, i don't think Daniel is all that evil and deserved to die. After watching it a second time i really noticed that he loved H.W., that he wanted family which is why he confided so much in his "brother" (and went nuts and became a murderer after he found who he really was), after all he really wanted somebody to love but everyone let him down in a way.
To say that the only thing you get from the film is incredible acting and nice cinematography is i think to do the film injustice. Every aspect of the film is excellent, from the music to the script to the direction and the flow and i could go on and on.
I like movies that take time to tell good stories, and this was that.

What more did you want from the film? And, I'm just curious, is there a movie you could say is your favorite of the decade so far?

It's in theatres, in Paramount (now Scotia Bank: what a stupid name for a cinema!), playing at times like 8:30 and 9:30.

Yeah, sorry guys for not putting spoiler warnings on my discussion, i'll edit that now .
Can't wait for that review Spin. Looks like my review of the film will be printed in Concordia's The Link newspaper so check that out if you can! (or else i'll just post it here if anyone cares to read it)

Posted by Marcus007 on Jan-15-2008 18:45:

i know what you're getting at... I just wish the ending was a bit more resolved... Yes, H.W becomes his own man which was a great scene... but it still makes no sense why Plainview would kill Eli. Like I said... great movie... beautiful acting, dialogue, cinematography... just wish he would've tied it all together the same way he tied Boogie Nights and Magnolia together...

Did you get chills when the oil came bursting out of the ground? Everyone in my theatre gasped when they heard that... rocked the audience louder than s&d at pepsi forum hahaha

Posted by Mitsutranza on Jan-15-2008 19:11:

SPOILERS AGAIN

Yeah man that scene was crazy!!! I gotta say that i watched this movie in New York and then last night here and it was a VERY different experience. It was the premier in New York and the place was PACKKKEDD, people seemed really into the movie laughing and reacting like crazy to certain scenes (the oil gushing, Daniel's baptism and the last scene especially) and they applauded when it was over, something i find pretty weird coz they're clapping to a screen hehe. Here it was quite different, a few laughs here and there, a few walk-outs, not packed at all and mostly quiet through-out. Paramount definately needs to do something about their sound, it was too loud at points (like the scene you mention) and my ear drums were reminded of Stereo's soundsystem

Now about that ending hehe, sorry if i'm being a bit adamant with my debating but how did you experience the character of Eli? Was he not a weasel who wanted power and respect by basically mocking religion? How did you not WANT this character to die? How did you not expect him to die after what he did to Daniel during that baptism? I mean, Daniel even tells him that he'll bury him underground one day so i was totally expecting it and if it didn't happen i would of been pissed. The guy deserved what was coming.
It also makes sense thematically; Eli was the last remaining piece of unfinished business for Daniel. Like i said, in order for Daniel's desire to come true he needed to kill Eli. He needed to kill the man that was so much like him because he would be thinking about him constantly if he didn't, they were VERY similar and a man like Daniel Plainview needed to remain the sole specimen of that kind of human being. It made total perfect sense for me. Did you notice how nothing woke him up until Eli mentioned his own name? That's how much this guy got to him.

I would say, see the movie again, i doubt you're feelings about the ending would be the same.

So do you have a movie you could say is among your favorite of the decade so far? (these past few years have been awesome for film don't you think?)

Posted by Enjoy on Jan-15-2008 19:12:

ok but is it better than die hard 4??? i dont think so, no i dont

Posted by Marcus007 on Jan-15-2008 19:23:

eli was a calm boy who liked the attention he got from the church

he also made money on the deal

WHAT A MONSTER

plainview... lets see... he killed not one but two people... abandoned his own son... only cared about the oil and the power... beat eli the fuck up...

HMMM

but damn was he a lovable monster, so well portrayed... even in the way day lewis walked... that's why i can't talk shit about it cuz other parts really shined

Posted by Mitsutranza on Jan-16-2008 00:16:

Hehe, well i'm sorry to say this Marc but it seems like you're only looking at the surface of things.
Eli is a calm boy? Did you not see that crazy scene where he's "taking out the devil" from that poor woman? Ridiculous (and quite amusing) nonsense about biting the devil with his teeth and kicking him with the boot? Heh. He ain't calm, the kid has issues. What about when H.W. has the accident? Do we see him caring at all or do we see him asking for his money? It's the second one.
Plainview loved his son. I didn't really see it the first time either, but the second time was very clear. He was heartbroken when he had to leave him because as harsh the situation was he knew he couldn't be a good father to him. Did he leave him on the street? No. He left him in the care of his most trusted friend. Not so evil is it?
Killed two people. Yes. The first one pretended to be his brother so he can have success and basically make life easy for himself through Daniel's hard work and the second was a menace to religion and a complete fraud. Plainview is a bad man but those people had it coming man, come on.

Like I say, see the film again and you'll see what I'm talking about. It's one of those films that you get so much out of after a second viewing.

Looks like Eli got to you like he did to those people in his sermons and that just isn't right! :P

Posted by Marcus007 on Jan-16-2008 00:24:

You know... I get the faux-brother killing... it's mainly Eli's death that irks me...

So because Eli was a fake... Plainview should kill him?

Does this really make sense for the story? Why throw it all away to beat Eli to a pulp with a fucking bowling pin?

Why did he turn into such a fucking asshole half way through the movie? And what ever happened to Plainview's most trusted friend? Where did this character disappear to?

Posted by Mitsutranza on Jan-16-2008 07:47:

SPOIELRS

Killing his fake brother was a turning point, he realized and we realized that he has what it takes to be a murderer. This connects with the end.

It seems like you're simplifying Eli's death too much when it's much more complex than that. He didn't just kill Eli coz he was a fake.
hate quoting myself but i said it all before...

quote:
How did you not WANT this character to die? How did you not expect him to die after what he did to Daniel during that baptism? I mean, Daniel even tells him that he'll bury him underground one day so i was totally expecting it and if it didn't happen i would of been pissed. The guy deserved what was coming.
It also makes sense thematically; Eli was the last remaining piece of unfinished business for Daniel. Like i said, in order for Daniel's desire to come true he needed to kill Eli. It made total perfect sense for me. Did you notice how nothing woke him up until Eli mentioned his own name? That's how much this guy got to him.

Connect all that with the fact that Eli is a piece of shit (remember how he treated his own father? AND THIS GUY IS MEANT TO BE RELIGIOUS), with Daniel's opening himself up to the man he thought was his brother (only adds more to his tragedy) when he says he has competition in him, he needs to get away because he sees right through people etc.

Connect all that with the silent words we never hear uttered by Daniel to Eli after that humiliating baptism scene and tell me you didn't see Eli's death coming and how much he deserved it!!!!!

See the film again.

he doesn't throw anything away, he's still a billionaire when we leave him and (like i said before), it's obvious he's not going to jail.

When did Plainview turn into an asshole? Did he not always care mainly about rising to the top? When he sees that oil gushing he stays there ALL FREAKING DAY looking at it coz he's going slightly mad with power. When he loses his son as a partner (After the kid has the accident) he starts to alienate himself, when he realizes his brother is a fake he COMPLETELY alienates himself and only continues to grow more mad (and continues to drink and drink). He gives that speech about people and we find out A LOT about this man during that speech. It's all very progressive with perfect flow dude.
Fletcher his most trusted friend took care of H.W. after H.W. came back Fletcher was still there in the background but it was already nearing the end of the film and his purpose for the story was over. What more did you want from him? He was always in the background and he just became another person Plainview became alienated from. That's it.

I think your first viewing got muddled by the truly incredible preformance of Daniel Day Lewis. This is totally understandable because my first viewing was a bit too.

See the movie again.
