CORe's Cloverfield review (Some spoilers!)

First off, and once again, the movie is badass and I recommend it for everyoney. On to the good stuff.

PROS:
1. The monster is badass, really why anyone said it's a whale is completely unnecessary because it looks nothing like it. This monstrocity looks more like the huge fucking thing for The Mist than anything else.
2. The monster's effect is personal when it sheds some crab/spider-like creatures that runneth all over the fucking place. When they bite one gets infected and explodes (SHIT YOU NOT!).
3. Monster + SFX are realistic and very VERY well done. It's believable and a lot of time and effort were put into the CGI on this film. Apart from the first 15-20 minutes your attention is never taken away.
4. The story line is well drawn and believable apart from few instances. The cast is fantastic, except for the best friend of the leading guy, he ends up holding the camera for most of the movie and sometimes gets annoying with his dumbass comments.
5. It's uniquely shot though one camera viewpoint (SOME BATTERY ON THIS MOTHER!). But incredibly edited and one doesn't get bored.

CONS:
1. The camera work is shaky, obviously because of the hand-held shooting, and is downright nauseating at times. I had to look away and compose myself at least 5 times throughout the film because I felt that bile creep up in my stomach. So if you get motion sickness real easy (which I don't really), you might be really uncomfortable throughout the film.
2. I understand we're getting to know the cast and characters and to really feel for them, but for the first 15-20 minutes absolutely nothing happens. The beginning of the tape is him with this girl in some NYC highrise and they're tossing strawberries at each other deciding to go on a date to Coney Island. Then they throw the dude a going away bash cuz he's going to Japan, and accidently film over this date of theirs.
3. It's a bit of a sappy love story. At the party he finds out she's now with some new guy because he's been avoiding her, trying not to get attached. So he doesn't mind the whole date being filmed over. Then when all the shit goes down she's trapped in her apartment and leaves him a message so he goes to rescue her... I guess it's something for the ladies.
4. A few instances of unbelievable shit. Like the bitch surviving and actually running at the end of the movie after being impaled for 2+ hours on a metal rod in her apartment. Whole gang gets attacked by those spidery things but only one girl gets bit... and explodes LOfuckingL.
5. Some action is predictable. Like obviously the spidery things are going to attack in the darkness of the subway when they're hearing noises and playing around with the camera's nightvision. But the CGI is done well enough to make it believable.

CONCLUSION:

The film is done really well and original. The way it's shot really makes you feel like you're a part of it, like you're right there surviving with the rest of the crew. Action is non-stop after the opening bit of introducing the characters. There's some humor injected here and there, with a bit of irony, which really makes the story come along - it's not just a gory monster movie. Everything is well done, and apart from the camera-work, nothing is really that annoying. I enjoyed it immensley and recommend for all to see.

cheersies!

Haha, I just meant Baltimore or DC. I wasn't sure if it was in limited release or not and wanted to know how far I would have to travel to see it tonight.

Posted by denys envy on Jan-16-2008 14:14:

seriously!

no one is interested in asking questions about the movie? really? i mean i'll whore myself out some more, no problem. but i was kinda hoping the thread would generate more interest in the film.

fucking right. they bring it on bit by bit. at the end of the film the monster stares down the camera guy and fucks him up good.

there's a great arial shot when they're in the helicopter and also when rescuing the girl from the apartment that lets you get the whole picture of this thing.

someone went to a lot of work to make it look like nothing before.

o_o i... must... see

So just how big is the monster, was it standing next to any buildings or anything to compare it to? I'm not sure why they wouldn't just nuke it and be done with it considering how few survivors there were anyway. But I guess if they do that then there is no movie.

ever since i saw the trailer that guy posted about 4 weeks ago

i literaly went bananas about the movie o-o

it's relatively big. it walks on all fours but it stands up to take the top off some well-known building in NYC. it also kicks the shit out of the statue of liberty and its tail smashes right through the Brooklyn Bridge.

the bitch can leap pretty high too.

i'd say a little bit under Godzilla's size. Definitely not as bulky looking.

also, the thought came to me this morning, judging from the movie there's a strong possibility there's more than one of these things.

Posted by leph555 on Jan-16-2008 14:27:

so it is a freaking whale?

i mean it could be anything. but it's badass and looks nothing like a friendly slow-ass blue whale.

once they start tanking and rocket launching the thing it gets pretty aggressive and pissed.

there's also a strong possibility that there's more than one of these things, and even two different monsters. I had no time to pay attention to details, I'm definitely going to see it a second time to look for this.

Thanks for the review Denys - I tried to just skim it so as to miss any major spoilers, but it definitely sounds like something I want to go see this weekend.

Cheers.

definitely go dude.

by the way kids, if you bring your woman, don't expect to have a shoulder/forearm/bicep intact by the end of the film. I have claw marks up and down my right arm.

"damn baby, you're worse than the monster!"

Posted by Frenchie on Jan-16-2008 14:39:

Omg this made me 10x more excited! We're def seeing this Friday.

Lol, Myra wouldn't go to see it anyway - I think I might be flying solo to this one. Absolutely zero interest from any of my friends.

some guy (horribly) attempted to draw the monster in his review: http://www.kidreviewer.com/2008/01/...field-2008.html
