Mixing in the headphones...

For the past year I have been mixing in my headphones and not using the monitors for mixing only for mixing in a track. A friend of mine who owns small industrial space that he basically lives in and has a mini club in got a new rane mixer and this mixer does not have headphone mix? the hell it doesen't for a 1500 doller mixer is beyond me. My question is how the fuck can u tell if the beat is on using just once channel on yer phones and one channel with the monitor. I guess its practice but its really hard to get used to. They should make all mixers have headphone mix for crying out loud..

yeah I know my mixer doesnt have headphone mixing either, I think it is kind of good to practice with a mixer like this just incase you ever play in a club without headphone mixing. But not having a headphone mixer is definately enought to make me buy a new mixer!!!

I personally only mix between my headphones and the monitor. It can be relatively easily at home.. it's club conditions that scare the shit out of me.

i used to mix in the headphones
but now i use the monitor and one ear...its A LOT easier, especially if you'redoing fast mixes because you can quickly tell if the beats are drifting slightly by checking the headphones and comparing it to the monitor (makes for adjustments before the best of ears can notice them from the system)

it just takes a while to get used to...but eventually (at least i did) you'll find using hte monitor a lot easier
plus you don't have to worry about if the club you're spinning at has a headphone cue or not

I use the monitor and one ear, BUT unfortunately it messes me up quite a bit. What will often happen is that I'll be hearing stuff that sounds perfect, and yet when I go back and listen to what I've recorded, it turns out the beats are slightly off! And I couldn't tell that just by listening to my sound-system while mixing!

Imagine what it's like in a club

Werd! I experience the exact same thing when I'm mixing too; I think I just did an awesome transition, went back to listen to it and heard double beats.

Although I would have to say trainwrecking in club conditions would be easier to get out of, mainly because the speaker systems are sooo loud that you won't be able to tell the difference between double beats THAT much.

Totally agreed
I Replaced my Vestax PCV-175 Mixer to a PCV-275
just for that...

a monitor isn't a large speaker for the headphones haha

its just a speaker that's meant to face the dj at a club, usually located right beside them on the right or left side, or both

point of this is so the dj can hear the music without a delay and hear it clearly, because sometimes there is a delay between the mixer & speakers in large clubs

if there wasn't a monitor, its really hard to hear the music behind hte tables because the speakers are faced away from you (had this problem last night, no monitor)

I dont take my headphones when i spin, Everything just sounds clearer through the headphones, especially when your playing on a loud system. Even when i practice i do everything through the hadphones, mainly to spare my family from the non-stop music. I guess it all depends on the sound system being used, I know a bunch of DJ's that turn the moniters toward the crowd because they dont like to use em.
