Why does THC cause some people's hearts to race..and is this bad?

For a lot of people, THC causes the heart to race. Is this bad for the heart?

Cocaine does the same thing, yet, we know for sure cocaine is detremental for the heart.

Why is it that we ignore the fact that THC causes the heart to speed up unnaturally as well?

So the same argument could be made for cocaine...or meth...or anything else that speeds up the heart.

For the record, I'm not high....but I am concerned about future use.

My heart goes insane when I smoke.. which is why I dont anymore. if it happens to you then dont do it. if it doesnt.. keep puffin away

It's probably a mixture of the person's state of mind, brain chemicals, and his/her tolerance for THC. My friend has smoked dank every day for 15 years, and he told me weeks ago he has never felt even remotely bad from smoking. Never. He smokes a lot, too. At one sitting. A lot.

State of mind is crucial, as well. If you feel like you may get sick, you will get sick. I don't smoke anymore, but if I smoked as much as he did, I would probably die. See what I mean? I would only die because I think I would die. This is fun!

perhaps he is one of those people whose heart is not effected.

I am wondering if the increase in heart rate is benign for those that experience it. This increase in heart rate, at least for me, comes WITHOUT having anxiety or worry about it. It just happens.

THC does have some stimulant qualities to it. But if you heart starts racing out of control and then you freak out about it and other things start to happen like hyperventilation, feeling dizzy, etc., thats a panic attack.

Posted by Zoso on Jan-18-2008 12:21:

The most consistent physiological sign is an increased pulse rate (Mendelson et al., 1972; Johnson and Domino, 1971; Renault et al., 1971; Galanter et al., 1972; Domino, 1970; Hollister et al., 1968 Manno et al., 1970; Mayor's Committee 1944; Waskow et al., 1970; Isbell and Jasinski, 1969; Meyer et al., 1971; Weil et al., 1968; Jones and Stone, 1970; Clark and Nakashima, 1968). This does not appear to be a direct drug effect on the heart (Manno et al., 1970). Instead, the drug appears to cause complex changes in the autonomic nerves regulating heart rate. Thus, Kiplinger et al. (1971) demonstrated that the increase produced by marihuana in heart rate is prevented by pretreatment with a Beta-sympathetic nervous system blocking agent, propranolol. A comparable increase rate was produced by treatment with isoprotemol, a Beta-sympathetic like drug. One subject developed an abnormal bigeminal rhythm after both marihuana and isoproternol.

Renault et al. (1971) noted a consistent effect of marihuana on the cardiac rhythm which also produced an increased heart rate. The effect was the suppression of the normal sinus arrhythmia usually produced by respiration. Respiration usually produces a slowing of heart rate mediated by the vagal parasympathetic nerve supply. This depression of normal vagal tone was further evidenced by the absence of heart rate slowing during forced expiration against a closed glotis (valsalva maneuver). This effect seemed to wax and wane over several minutes producing alternate periods of rapid and slowed heart rate.

just eat some benzos before you smoke, problem solved

no way its not supposed to be racing, its supposed to stop!

Posted by Fibonacci on Jan-18-2008 12:54:

it's very likely that the heart is racing, and you just don't feel it. It doesn't always feel like palpatations. I appreciate my good health so I don't touch any of that junk.

Posted by TheVrk on Jan-18-2008 13:11:

Weed stimulates heart rate for like 15 mins...coke, meth, speed whatever it SUSTAINS an elevated heartrate for MUCH longer
(depending on how much you do)

Posted by KiNeTiC ENeRgY on Jan-18-2008 16:52:

It can actually be both a stimulant or a depressant depending on the strain. Its not as bad as Coke or Meth cause it doesn't jack up the heart that much compared to those 2, and doesn't constrict the blood vessels like Coke does. One things for sure it stimulates my appetite. If a user is having a racing heart, I would bet its cause that person is having a fit of paranoia or a slight freak out session as most of us pot heads have probably had at least once...its in your head though and if u can calm yourself down, your heart rate drops as well.

I had one of those dreams last night that i was smoking a fat jay that never seems to have an end. I had to force myself awake it was starting to turn into a nitemare

Posted by xstalkrx on Jan-18-2008 18:26:

I would be willing to bet that people who already have an arrythmia, could potentially die from smoking weed.

There are probably plenty of deaths out there caused by THC, but not as a direct effect.

This would keep the hippies that keep claiming "weed has never killed anyone" to keep chanting.

"Although rare, severe shutdown of blood circulation to the arms or legs has been reported in young people who smoked marijuana. In some cases, it was so severe that amputation was required. Marijuana may also serve as a trigger for heart attack on rare occasions, usually within an hour after smoking. Allergic reactions have been reported, some of which were severe."

http://www.cancer.org/docroot/ETO/c...sp?sitearea=ETO

So if a heart attack killed someone because the THC triggered it, the cause of death would be heart attack and not THC. I think the general public is rather blind, ignorant and/or high while claiming that weed is not in anyway potentially harmful.

The only time it did that to me was when I ate a weed oatmeal brownie.

Posted by lcid on Jan-18-2008 19:11:

it's one of the reasons i've stopped (well, cut down on, rather ) smoking. i have a heart murmur and every time i feel my heart beating fast i get super paranoid.

Posted by nchs09 on Jan-18-2008 19:13:

Ya when i smoke and i am REALLY baked my heart starts going really fast and really hard. Doesn't really freak me out though... i think it is kinda cool.

Exercise speeds up your heart. Hard exercise speeds up your heart a lot. Is this bad for your heart?

The answer is that it depends on the person. If you've been diagnosed with any cardiovascular problem, then don't do it. That's just common sense. If you can do hard exercise (say, running a quarter mile a few times at top speed with a minute of rest between each time) without any chest pain or faintness, then it's pretty damn doubtful that weed will kill you. But I guess there's always that microscopic chance.

From the moment you leave your house in the morning, your chances of dying increase. Everything involves some degree of risk.

I hate it when this happens. Sometimes my heart will go uber fast, and because I'm high, I get paranoid and freak out, but I always calm down and realize that it's just something weed does to you. It's never caused me harm, and I jog all the time, so I think I have a relatively healhty heart.

Upon diving into my psych book, drugs that speed up the heart do not give the heart what it needs to run at that speed. When you exercise...your heart gets everything it needs...to put it simply.

If drugs speeding up your heart was a good idea, then crack addicts, coke addicts, meth heads, etc. would be world class athletes. Instead they find themselves clutching their chests in pain in the ER room.

But are the same risks present with THC that speeds up the heart? That is really the question....and I'd like to see if the same effects were present if you used a vaporizer.

I'd really like someone to prove that THC isnt bad on your heart...because I love it.

Hey, I never said that it was a good idea. If you care much about your health, anything but occasional moderate drug use is a bad idea. But the fact is that most people who take drugs -- any drug, even heroin -- don't develop serious health problems from doing so.

Cocaine is detrimental to the heart because it interferes with the heart's conduction. It also causes vasospasm (when the blood vessels spasm and constrict, eventually causing tissue death) and occlusion. Increased heart rate alone isn't enough to cause a heart attack. Well no...that depends...but for simplicity's sake, we'll just say it isn't.
