Direct Drive vs Belt Drive - Trance djing.

Does it really matter if i go ahead and buy a belt drive, if i'm only going to be mixing, not scratching. I'm not exactly rich, and belt drives are alot cheaper. But if its just best to get direct drives, say so ;D

i r n00b.

if you absolutly have to start mixing right at this moment, then go ahead and get the belt drives...

but the direct drives are a lot better for mixing since there is little to no fluctuation in pitch when you're trying to mix

i've mixed on both and i say get the DD

get Direct-drives, even if you haven't got much money. With belt-drives you will get problems with the belt. even the cheapest direct-drives are better than the best belt-drives.
So just get some more money en go for the DDs, it's worth it.

ok, cool, thnx. i was kinda suspecting somthing like that.

Posted by Luke Terry on May-04-2002 22:15:

Cool

DDs - preferably techs or vestax

don't even think about getting belt-driven TT's
otherwise you will be refused membership here at www.tranceaddict.com

Belt drives will screw up your mixing. You can't beatmatch, you can't adjust small fluctuations in tempo, you can't do shit with 'em. Trust us and get directs!

Sell a kidney, rob a bank, work 24hrs a day for as long as it takes, whatever!

You *need* Technics!!!

Posted by P`zazz on May-05-2002 12:58:

Actually This Is Not Completely True. I Have A Friend That Bought Belt-Driven TTs About 3-4 Years Ago (I Can't Remember What Make They Are) And They F****** Rule. If I Put Every One Of You To Spin On Them Without Telling You They Are Belt-Driven You Would Think They Where Direct-Driven With Over 1kg/cm Of Torque. And The Pitch Is Just Fine, He Can Still Perform Incredible Mixes Even After 4 Years. So My Advise Is If You Find A VEry Good Belt-Driven TT And It's Cheap Then Go For It. But I Agree With The Guys That A Direct-Drive TT Will Last A Lot Longer And Would Make Your Life A Lot Easier. If Not In The Short Run, Then Definately In The Long Run.

i used to have belt driven decks.. they were that bad.. just no torque but they held a pitch pretty constant

Posted by Special_K on May-05-2002 21:28:

man just save up, belt driven tables are so stonage, no sense learning on somthing you will never actually use If you play out

Posted by MERiDiAN5i2 on May-08-2002 21:17:

i hate to sound like this... but ...

either get whatever you can afford, or get 1200's... Nothing has the specifications that 1200's have. .01% wow & flutter. very stable!

Direct drive tables are easier to deal with, and more stable. belt drives can be much less stable and can be hard to beatmatch on.

try to atleast find a decent deal on some direct drive tables. the most appealing cheap-o direct drive table that I know of is the stanton STR8-60, which is fairly cheap. but there are others.

all in all, if you get serious you'll want 1200's... hehe

I went through the same ordeal when I was lookin to get tables, and I waited and got 1200's...let me tell ya, the wait was worth it! But I learned on belt drives. IMO don't pay for belt drives!

Mer: I don't know the nitty gritty of the tables, but can you xplain what the .01% wow and flutter is?

Peace

Direct drives, Belt drives are ok for learning, but belt drives just mix easier

honestly i'm no sound/deck engineer myself... but it was at one point in time explained to me - what it all boiled down to was the accuracy of the deck - the same term is used on tape decks, cd players, etc.

the lower the number, the more stable the mechanics are. i'll try to find a more technical explanation and post it for yall ...

Ok. This should make a little more sense.

from: http://www.classicaudio.com/gloss

Flutter: Quick waver of pitch caused by speed fluctuations in the movement of tapes or discs. Heard as a sort of quiver.

Wow: Slow variation of pitch caused by speed fluctuation in tape or record movement.

so, basically, wow & flutter is a measurement of the speed accuracy of the deck.

this is important because speed changes cause the beats of two mixed tracks to go out of sync....

So in English, that would mean "Flutter- Unexpected speeding up of platter" and "Wow- Unexpected slowing down of platter", wouldn't it.

Sounds good to me

dude belt drives suck. they have horrible torque, they don't hold their pitch and the belt motor is unstable. plus all the pros use directdrive if u can afford it get technics but if u can't go with a cheap dd table.
