my employer is lame.

Since it's inventory we've been working over time for the past 3 days, and my employer has a 'save money' mindset, so to even the score, they gave us a half day today, so really, I will get 1 hour less this paycheck than a regular paycheck. god i hate those assholes.

Is this common practice? or is this one of the places that you'll never find on Forbes "Best businesses to work for"?

For unskilled labor they do this, and a lot.

Word of advice. Get an education. Get a career. Then you wouldn't have to worry about this.
