U2-3d

All right ladies and gents...

I'm not even a big U2 fan, but this was by far one of the coolest IMAX 3D movies I've ever watched.

It kinda made you feel like you were a fly and you were zipping around the massive arena watching U2. Definitely something that anyone can really appreciate even if you're not a fan.

Anyone here seen it or planning on watching it? I'm sure there must be some of you guys that appreciate U2.

We caught a double feature last night and U23D followed Cloverfield. Honestly it was a real fun experience seeing both movies together. Both movies were just PURE FUN.

Been a loyal U2 fan for years and I had a perma-grin (almost like an E-grin) the entire time I was watching this amazing 3D film in the IMAX theatre.

how long is it?

I'm skeptical that (even though being a U2 fan) I could sit through 2 hours of a "live concert" without getting fidgity.

Though I bet this is 10000x better blazed.

Behold the future, and the saviour of the failing theatre industry!

I caught the 10:15pm show at the Scotia Theatre last night. Wow.

Where to start?

These aren't your daddy's 3D glasses, the cheap paper ones I was expecting. Nice molded plastic units, very comfortable.

The show is 1.5 hours long, but it's over in no time at all.
The concert on it's own is great. Good set list including a lot of classics and a few new tracks. Even a non-U2 fan would recognise and enjoy the show on it's performance and technical merits. It's obvious they picked the tracks based on the fact this was going to be shot for the purpose of presentation in theatres, and therefore has to cater to a wide audience, but that's not a hinderance.

A lot of the camra work is done with cable-mounted units, able to move in three dimensions. There is a lot of fly-over shots, which really added to the depth afforded by the 3D image. The colours are excellent and the layering of visual levels and fades are amazing in 3D.

Top marks go to shots of the drum kit, which appears sharp and really gives you the best impact with the lighting shining off the hardware and cymbals. When the drummer strikes the cybals, and the drums for that matter, you really see them move and resonate in 3D. Very well done.

The cross-stage shots of Bono and Edge layer well and add the the 'huge' feel of the show. The only downside I noticed is when there is a tight shot on one performer, with another in the background and backlighting, the two sides of the 3D image don't sync perfectly and there is some ghosting...probably because the two lenses were trying to foucus on seperate portions of the shot. It's a little distracting, but only happens here and there and doesn't affect the overall show. When the lighting instruments aren't in the back of the shot and there are two performers in frame, they are both in focus and again, really give you the true value of the 3D experience.

I did have a little headache when I left, but that might have been the whiskey and party favours. I did get a little fidgety near the end and if it was any longer I think it would have been too much.

All in all, it is worth every penny of your $14 ticket price...and then some. Even if you aren't a U2 fan, it is worth seeing. You will not be disappointed.

I'll be taking the girlfriend to see it next weekend, and I'd go a third time without hesitation.

My rating: four and a half stars out of five.

Questions?

Amazing!!! Their previous "Live in Concert" movie that was released in theatres was called Rattle & Hum (black & white), and it does NOT even compare to this 3D movie. In fact, no other live in concert movie can compare to this... one of a kind!
U2 3D was based on the Vertigo tour, and having gone to a couple of Vertigo shows, I know that it was definitely cut down quite a bit. The average show ran just over 2 hours, however for the sake of non-U2 fans, the movie has all their big hits in 1.5 hrs! There's no doubt that you'll recognize 90% of the songs. Great concept (3-dimensional concert) and great views of the venue and stage. The vibe between the band and the crowd totally captures the essence of what a U2 concert is really like!
I had a smile on my face during the entire movie and totally felt like i was at the show. At times, i was REALLY tempted to jump out of my Imax chair and start singing at the top of my lungs!
A must-see movie/ show!

5 STARS!!!
