Professional TA DJs, do you play pirate stuff?

Or did/does occasionally?

Lets be sincere.

I buy ALL my EDM music, but i admit that i illegaly download hiphop music for small parties with friends and the like.

Only on VERY rare occasions. For instance, if there is a white label track that isn't for sale digitally anywhere and no one is selling the vinyl on Discogs or GEMM.

Yes. There's so much shit that's just never released on any online shops not to mention back catalogues of record labels that also aren't on online download shops. I really don't see too huge of an issue from it in all honesty (in regards to bedroom djs/small-time).

same as a.chan playing out with pirated songs is pretty crappy.. i do understand there are some songs with location or permissions problems, for those i dont hold anything against others but i dont do it personally.

I don't do it. There is plenty of good music out there without having to resort to piracy. And if it's such a must have track it's obviously making waves, I can usually get hold of a legit copy quite easily. Don't know about the US but here in the UK DJs will often trade promos amongst themselves and often we may end up with at least two copies of stuff anyway. In the old days you would sell it to a record shop, now it's valued currency for trade.

If I'm playing a paying gig then all the music is legally purchased. If its a house party with friends/family I play some pirated music but those chances are very very slim. It's a respect thing for me.

I buy 99% of my music I'd say.

Of course I will sometimes resort to eMule for a tune or two (usually a Prydz promo or something that is leaked quite obviously by the artist).

I dislike pirates, as Gene Simmons said, it's robbery and it will kill the music industry.

95% of music I play is stuff that brought by me or copied off a friend. But only 5% is pirated and all here.

The exception goes to white labels or unreleased stuff. I couldn't (ethically) go with pirating a track that I can easily get on Beatport/iTunes/CD-Maxi/Vinyl.

i dun trust the quality of piracy.

I do, when it's unreleased remixes from friends. I buy a 100 % of my music. I also don't use mp3s. The only pirate stuff in my CD collection is what I couldn't buy in shops. i.e. the first Wipeout soundtrack, I have been looking everywhere for it, couln't find it,and had to download it in the end. Then a couple of years later,I found a pristine copy of the first wipeout game on playstation, and extracted the audio. Legal wise,I own the original so it's all good.

The result are abit equally so far.

But, would be nice to say:

"Don't find the track for buying? Don't play."?

or

"I have only a pirate copy, but it's an amazing unknown stuff, and the peoples will know and like."?

I was just about to say: You can pop any of the PSX Wipeout games into a CD player and listen to the soundtrack/rip the songs onto a PC. Jet Moto 2 had the same feature (but the music sucked), and Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night has an bonus not-in-game track that you can only get through this way.

That's what I did ultimatly. I was lucky enough to find a pristine original of the game. I got rid of the first track which is the program and got hold of the whole soundtrack.

I had to rip the sound from wipeout fusion and a few other games. Not really a problem since the Ps2 has an optical out, makes it a breeze

Back in my vinyl days I used to often DL mp3s of tracks that I'd already ordered and were tied up at customs, or ones that I had on pre-order. The only tracks I ever downloaded that I didn't buy were ones that I simply could not find on any of the dozens of online record stores I shopped from.

Nowadays it seems pretty damn cheap to pirate any of this stuff. I guess if you want to be really up-front and can't get the shit on one of the many digital download services, but why bother. It's so cheap and easy to get new tunes now compared to the vinyl days.

I play a lot of mainstream dance. I'm lucky enough that I get the music sent to me. But when there's a really good mashup or remix that I can't find, I try my hardest to get it legitly. If I can't find it, I may use a pirate until I find the legit version.

When playing true EDM, I either get it straight from the artist, or I purchase the download. I don't take any chances with EDM as sound quality is a HUGE issue.

^^ yeah, sound quality is motivation enough to not pirate anything.

if your not getting paid to play then it should'nt really matter, if your in your house mixing fuck who cares. if your playing out every week/month, then i play the tracks i paid for, and the sound quality is the biggest issue. besides, most of the shit i d/l are just random tunes, the stuff i purchase is the music i lean on mostly anyways for gigs. that said there's some older tracks that are'nt available digitally, and so in that case ya i'll play a ripped version, not very often though.

still love this track but cant find digital release.

When I used to do very very commercial venues, I have no shame in admitting I did from time to time.
However, only if if it was some ultra commerical cheese wank, that was the flavour of the week (not even flavour of the month...no longevity), I wasnt sent the promo, and I knew that after that week or two I would never play it again.
