OMG Pot causes cancer!

A new cancer study on pot. According to the Toronto Star, it was based on a study of 79 cancer patients. Didn't they do a study like this back in 2006 where they concluded that smoking dope poses no increased risk for lung cancer? And that study was based on over 3000 people... Anyway, here's the first article I read about this today.

p2pnet news | Off Topic:- Pot, weed, dope, whacky baccy, call it what you will, is dangerous far beyond what people have believed to date, says a new report.

Smoking a joint is equivalent to 20 cigarettes in terms of lung cancer risk, scientists in New Zealand have found, as they warned of an epidemic of lung cancers linked to cannabis, says Reuters, going on:

Studies in the past have demonstrated that cannabis can cause cancer, but few have established a strong link between cannabis use and the actual incidence of lung cancer.

In an article published in the European Respiratory Journal, the scientists said cannabis could be expected to harm the airways more than tobacco as its smoke contained twice the level of carcinogens, such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons, compared with tobacco cigarettes.

Tokers, end up with five times more carbon monoxide in their bloodstream (than tobacco smokers), the story has team leader Richard Beasley, at the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand, saying. There are higher concentrations of carcinogens in cannabis smoke what is intriguing to us is there is so little work done on cannabis when there is so much done on tobacco.

Fewer side effects

Also in New Zeaand, Just half a joint can trigger short-term symptoms similar to schizophrenia: small amounts of the drug can cause paranoia, hallucinations and delusions associated with other mental illnesses. Schizophrenics psychotic symptoms worsen with cannabis use, says the Sunday Star Times, quoting the latest health research.

But on the plus side, research found that one active ingredient in cannabis inhibits psychotic symptoms in schizophrenics.

Aids patients with debilitating nerve pain get as much pain relief from cannabis as from prescription medications, and with fewer side effects and, Occasional use of cannabis is not harmful to teenagers, but those who smoke cigarettes as well develop problems, and are likely to be heavier cannabis users.

An ingredient in cannabis may help prevent mad cow disease, says the Sunday Star Times, adding:

A single joint has the same effect on the smokers lungs as smoking up to five cigarettes in one go.

Heavy cannabis use among vulnerable young people leads to more social problems.

The greatest number of social problems is found among the heaviest users.

Driving under the influence of cannabis is more common than previously thought, and more dangerous than driving under the influence of alcohol. <------- (ROFLMAO, yeah right. This comment alone makes me want to disregard the entire study)

And ominously, we may soon see, an epidemic of lung cancers connected with this new carcinogen, Beasley says in the Reuters story, concluding, the future risk probably applies to many other countries, where increasing use of cannabis among young adults and adolescents is becoming a major public health problem.

No clue, just saw the couple of articles pop up today on a couple of front-pages.

The story is amusing to me, because I've been researching this for off and on for years. Back in 2000 they said that smoking a joint was like smoking 4-5 cigarettes, and that you were MORE likely to get lung cancer from marijuana, one of the researches also concluded it was likely because THC inhibited your cancer-killing cells or some such. Link to 2000 article

Then in 2006, they concluded in a study that smoking marijuana posed no increased risk of lung cancer. And the researcher there concluded it was because THC inhibits cancer cells. Link to 2006 Study

Now, based on a test on 79 people, they're concluding that smoking 2 joints a day for 10 years means you're 5.7 times more likely to get lung cancer, and that one joint is like smoking 20 (yes, TWENTY) cigarettes. Link to Toronto Star article 2008

While I have no doubts that smoking anything can cause health problems, it's very hard to give ANY study real credit when they're continuously release conflicting results.

fucking a rectum is equivalent to 20 vaginas in terms of cancer risk, scientists in New Zealand have found, as they warned of an epidemic of buttseks linked to homosexuality, says Reuters, going on:

Studies in the past have demonstrated that taking the dirt road can cause cancer, but few have established a strong link between packing fudge use and the actual incidence of ass cancer.

In an article published in the European Respiratory Journal, the scientists said sodomy could be expected to harm the gastrointestinal system more than McDonald's as its action contained twice the level of gayness, such as an affinity for Broadway, compared with boy-girl sexy time.

Butt Pirates, end up with five times more santorum in their bedsheets (than striaght people), the story has team leader Richard Beasley, at the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand, saying. There are higher concentrations of the homo virus in buttseks what is intriguing to us is there is so little work done on bumfun when there is so much done on harpooning the hairy taco.

Fewer side effects

Also in New Zeaand, Just half a penis can trigger short-term symptoms similar to schizophrenia: small amounts of the gay can cause paranoia, hallucinations and delusions associated with other mental illnesses. Schizophrenics psychotic symptoms worsen with lube use, says the Sunday Star Times, quoting the latest health research.

But on the plus side, research found that one active ingredient in K-Y inhibits psychotic symptoms in schizophrenics.

Aids patients with debilitating nerve pain get as much pain relief from a good colon scraping as from prescription medications, and with fewer side effects and, Occasional use of toys is not harmful to teenagers, but those who smoke pole as well develop problems, and are likely to be heavier tanning booth users.

An ingredient in splooge may help prevent mad cow disease, says the Sunday Star Times, adding:

A single shot in the mouth has the same effect on the butt pirate's brown eye as poking up to five cootchies in one go.

Heavy Will and Grace references among vulnerable young people leads to more social problems.

The greatest number of social problems is found among the heaviest users.

Driving under the influence of gay is more common than previously thought, and more dangerous than driving under the influence of alcohol. <------- (ROFLMAO, yeah right. This comment alone makes me want to disregard the entire study)

And ominously, we may soon see, an epidemic of ass rape connected with this new homo-centric lifestyle, Beasley says in the Reuters story, concluding, the future risk probably applies to many other countries, where increasing use of the road less travelled among young adults and adolescents is becoming a major public health problem.

that's the part that I don't buy for a second.

a sudden cancer "epidemic" linked to pot...I doubt it. pot has been around for how long? um, shouldn't that epidemic have occurred a long time ago?

just because something "can" cause cancer does not mean it will. our bodies undergo MILLIONS of cell mutations per day...any ONE of which COULD become cancer. until there is an INCIDENCE link, this study is more publicity than anything else.

further...this is from smoking 1-2 joints per day, for one person? That's more than most habitual pot users smoke, I'll wager, and it's easily mitigated by altering your method of enjoying pot.

use a bong, you're blocking some substances and using far less pot each time you smoke.

use a vaporizer and you're virtually eliminating the carcinogens in the smoke.

interseting article, but we can't really extrapolate much from a very small scale case study like this. I'm all for further research though.

Everything causes Cancer these days...

Posted by SgtFoo on Jan-30-2008 23:38:

ppl who smoke cigarettes are flooded with the side effects all the time and they aren't affected.

it's not likely that ppl who smoke weed are going to be affected by this news either.

i dont think 79 people is a big enough sample size

for high end ones, like the Volcano, yeah...but you can get much cheaper ones for as little as $50-70 and decent ones for ~$200.

hell, you can ghetto construct your own using glass tubing for $10, tops, if you have a heat source like a gas stove.

it's so much more efficient, in terms of quantity of pot used...and it's not harsh on your lungs at all. tastes good too

Ya, but you can still get a lungful of cough!!! LOL

The first time I tried a vap (a real nice one, table-top, plugs in) I took as big a lungful as I could (being under the impression that there's no harshness) and ya... I coughed a lot a bit... hehehe.

It should probably also be noted that if you get shitty china-bud, you're better off smoking it with a pipe/bong/joint, because you are NOT getting even mildly buzzed off a vap if the weed isn't at least 'acceptable' quality. Then again, if you're investing in a vapourizer to begin with, you probably have a decent connection for bud.
