Progressive: '93 [Classic Progressive House]

After my epic house mix went down a lot better than I was expecting, I decided to put together a set of classic progressive house, which I'd been mulling over for a while. Like the last one it's themed around a particular year, this time 1993, hence the title (there's one track from 1994 in there), which was the golden year of the early progressive house scene.

Once again, I'm not sure if people will appreciate it- I'm feeling the pressure a bit! However, I hope you enjoy the music at least, if not how I mixed it. I also managed to get it under 80 minutes this time, so it can fit onto a CD. Enjoy:

Progressive: '93 [Classic Progressive House]
Tracklist:

1. Spooky - Little Bullet (Part 1)
2. Underworld - Dark & Long
3. New Order - Spooky (Magimix)
4. Fluke - Electric Guitar (Humbucker Mix)
5. Spooky - Schmoo (Underworld Remix)
6. Disco Evangelists - De Niro (Spaceflight Remix)
7. Havana - Ethnic Prayer
8. William Orbit - Water From A Vine Leaf (Xylem Flow Remix)
9. Mukka - Burachacca (Apollo 440 Remix)
10. Fade - For All The People (Album Mix)
11. Leftfield/Lydon - Open Up (Full Vocal Mix)
12. Bedrock Feat KYO - For What You Dream Of (Full On Renaissance Mix)

Yeah, I've been thinking about doing this one for a while, so I already had a fair idea of what to do with it. Trouble is, I've done two rapid fire mixes in 2008 already and now I probably won't do another one all year.

In an arcane and unique manner, using a program called Acoustica MP3 Audio Mixer. I have a proper CD deck setup at home, but I'm at university so I do them with software. It's a program that allows you to manipulate the volume and playback rate of sound files in a basic multi-track interface. I still have to work out and adjust the tempo myself and cue everything, so it's much harder than using something like Mixmeister that does everything for you. The trouble is, there's no EQing- oh how I miss kill switches.

Truth be told, I'm fucking terrified about this mix. I wasn't sure how people would react to the epic house one, because it took me a while to listen to it with any "distance" from what I'd just done. This one feels the same, except the tracks are bigger classics I'm fucking about with, and there's a bit of expectation on this one. I'm expecting it not to live up to its tracklist, although I hope I'm wrong.

Loving this tracklist! Listening now.

Fucking great mix mate.

My only issue...?

You have track 2 labeled as 'Underworld - Dark and Long'.

Am I tripping? I didn't hear that track anywhere in the mix

I have been drinking, so I may be wrong...?

Absolutely fantastic mix! Every transition I thought I was going to lose my mind as I heard the next classic come in (when I heard Water From a Vine Leaf start I about crapped my pants)...incredible stuff. Great flow too. And hot damn, your closing track! I will be giving this some more listens to be sure. Please, please post more stuff like this!

Now on to listen to your '95 Epic House mix...

Heh. You didn't hear the Dark Train mix, which is what everyone thinks when they read "Dark & Long". I used the original mix from the album Dubnobasswithmyheadman. You can hear the lyric "Kiss you, kiss you, dark and long" several times.

Thanks a lot. I wasn't sure if the way I brought Water From A Vine Leaf in was effective. I wanted to bring it in out of the breakdown of Ethnic Prayer to give the moment some drama, but I honestly couldn't tell if it worked or not.

Thanks to both of you for your praise.

This is the track that got me into dance music. Still one of my favorites.

Great stuff this, thoroughly enjoyed

Love that vocal mix of Open Up, you feel that with the shouted vocal it just shouldnt work, but it does.

Which release on Discogs do you have? There seem to be edits and other rubbish floating around, would like the same version as in this set if you can find the link

Edit: Never mind, its on Beatport. Shoulda looked there first

IN BRIEF: Well, he ca-
Oh, wait! We're not in the office, are we.

So I took a listen...

'Tis a nice little mix here, my friend. I wouldn't worry much about your transitions, as they're serviceable in getting from track to track without disrupting the flow in any significant way. Supposed 'Best DJs' often get by with less. Considering the limited production you had available, it's most fine.

I have to admit it was quite fun hearing some of these old-time tunes again, back when progressive house actually still sounded a bit housey, and the use of ravey-rave bits weren't shunned upon.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Feb-05-2008 14:59:

Yeah. One of my original intentions when planning this was to show just exactly what was "progressive" about progressive house. We had a couple of arguments in Music Discussion about what the term refers to, and this is basically my response to everyone who thinks that "progressive" means incremental development.

"Progressive" house was all about eclecticism and cross-pollination of other genres into house music's lexicon. Just on these tracks you hear dub (with Spooky), rock (Underworld, Leftfield, Fluke), cinematic music (Disco Evangelists, which samples from Apocalypse Now and Ennio Morricone's OUATIA score), contemporary rave and, inevitably, trance. That's what defined "progressive" house, and it's what the genre sorely misses today.

dloading now. interested in hearing this "eclecticism and cross-pollination of other genres into house music's lexicon" (say that 3 times quickly)
