Please help with kick...........

Is anyone in these forums successful at making a kick thwack? When I say thwack, I mean can u make your kick sound like it is being sucked from hyperspace and thrown at ya face kinda thwack. I have heard these kicks on the likes of Markus Shultz- Amsterdam 08 cd. And I have heard it elsewhere, but I cannot successfully make this type of kick. I have tried layering, compressing, sidechain compressing. I have tried lots of stuff, is it because I am all software? I don't get it, I don't think I am horrible at producing or anything, I understand compression. Someone please explain to me how to make this kick, or show me better yet..... no gay shit, but I will love you for life!

SHOW ME THE THWACKING KICK

please....

ps- maybe I am compressing wrong, if you think you know good compression settings, please explain, and yes I have used the tutorials.... still no thwack

you need to add super saw to your kick for the ultimate trance kick.

If by arpeggio you mean arpeggiated kick, then yes.

First question:

Does the kick thwack more when you set your compressor to 'bypass'?

Re: Re: Re: Please help with kick...........

No I haven't tried that one

I have tried high compression ratio's, I have tried different compressor's. Fab Filter's Pro C, and I tried my hardware compressor, Focusrite Compounder. And I do use good monitors, I have Event Sp8's
so its not my monitoring. I can make kick sound decent, I think
but I just can't get that feeling like the sucking feeling some of these dudes are getting. And I don't mean that in a perverted way

Ok, here are some examples for you to hear what I am talking about, hopefully the quality is good enough, I converted them to mp3.

Example 1 - http://www.box.net/shared/1ujlb8bggg

Example 2 - http://www.box.net/shared/fuqr164ws8

Example 3 - http://www.box.net/shared/x74okrkbos

Example 4 - http://www.box.net/shared/mx0ird1c0g

These are all from the same cd but, they are different kicks and to me they all have the sucking sound.

Now yes I know what sidechaining is and I know the effect it has, but I am talking specifically what the kick sounds like. Even when it is just say the kick and the hi-hats, you can hear it sounds so powerful from it being sucked, compressed or something. Please help me get this sound, I beg....

Also alot of what Armin Van Buuren plays sounds like this, I want it!

These kicks are all very different. I think the sound you are going for is largely a result of the bassline. The kicks are all vastly different.

Another important thing to consider, besides just the ratio and threshold, is the attack time. A higher attack time means that the compression won't occur until just a bit later into the kick. Seeing as how a kick is a very quick frequency sweep, high to low, then the higher pitch at the beginning isn't as compressed and punches a bit more.

If you're sidechaining your bass with the kick as the SC signal, then play with the attack time settings on that. The initial high frequencies of the kick won't clash with the bass, but the later lower portion will. Playing with the SC attack time can result in a different kick feeling.

Layering a pre-verbed hi-hat or snare can give a lead in to the kick. So instead of [uhn , ts, uhn, ts] you can get [uhn, ts, sh-uhn, ts] for instance.

So, I typed all that out because I really don't know what you mean by 'sucking' sound. Hopefully something there will throw you in the right direction.

I understand what you're looking for... To get that powerful "sucking-sound" you're talking about is all about compression with a late attack-time.. and using the right samples, or preferably making them yourself from scratch, so that you get the them exactly how you want them.

Yeah, I just covered that.

If you want to make your own, I HIGHLY recommend Ism Bazzism. http://www.ismism.de/home_e.htm

thanks for the quick response, I guess it could be the kick and the bassline together that get that sound I want. I think kicks and bassline 's has always been my problem, I will make something now like 16 bars and will post it soon....

Post up a couple measures of that kick, and a couple measures of that bassline seperately.
