Mmm, skyscraper. I love you.

Retarded. Imagine the maintenance costs. And the rent, if you want anything in there.

They already have the tallest building in the world! Damn Dubai...

I don't like it. What's the use in spying on people with ur spy cam when the floors keep rotating? Useless.

[edit] just spent half an hour looking at other vids on that site...what a cool site! Thanks for sharing.

Dubai and its people are pretty much filthy rich, and who the fuck gives a crap about the poor anymore

Who controls the floors rotations? What If you're sick as fuck and you just want the rotating to stop... do you have to call the landlord and beg him to put a stop on floor 57?

Or will this be an office building? I had the impression it would be an apartment, hotel or condo building.

Hmmmmm....

Pretty cool though.

Posted by nefardec on Feb-03-2008 18:45:

AFAIK a few people who own the entire block control the rotation.

Dubai is such a fucking mess. We've had a lot of discussion about this in the studio. Just about the shittiest form of urbanism since las vegas.

except, there's no casinos and nothing to do...

Barely any of the buildings are finished, and they are all meant for 'projected' population and tourism. There are not nearly enough people to fill them. Furthermore there is only one highway and it is far too inadequate for the proposed influx of people.

There's no street life (especially given the insane temperatures), no culture - just hundreds of ugly super-high-rises which are constructed in record time and designed by a combination of developers and typical 'starchitects'. and it's not even easy to get uae citizenship - most of the buildings contain hotel program.

there is even one development that is 5 clones of the chrysler building side-by-side.... NY, NY hotel in vegas?

a couple of my classmates went there for a mobile architecture studio last fall and they came back talking about how shitty the quality was and how the developments that look good on satellite look/smell/sound like shit in real life. apparently there are like 20 miles of billboards for new developments on the way from abu dhabi to dubai

ugh

EDIT -

so this project is news to me - the one I knew about was a proposal by OMA (one of rem koolhaas' firms) for a rotating slab tower in Dubai

Dubai, UAE

Las Vegas, USA

i thought i saw in the video that each floor is an apt and each individual has the controls to their floor.

also i bet that at certain times the management controls all the floors so the building can do cool swirls and other cool looks...

so like from 12-6am building is controled by management and 6am-12pm owners.. 12pm -3pm management... 3pm-12am owners.. etc..

something like that... or at least that would be my proposal..

fawwwwwwk. That picture of Dubai looks like a mess. Unless they plan on CLOSING down that wide ass street in the middle for pedestrians, it looks worse than Vegas. Who is going to want to walk down to the crosswalk to walk across? And with that many lanes stopping ALL the time to let people cross. I see only ONE bridge. Fuckin retarded. I hate Vegas too fyi but at least that's a little more walkable.

Ive been to Dubai and New York within the past 12 months and both places are different in many ways , I've never been to Vegas but I know lots of people who have and the temperature are almost similar to Dubai , Dubai was a peaceful holiday and a new experience for myself. I will agree that they have stolen a few concepts from other building from around the world but they have lots of new developments such as the Burg Towers, The Palm and the World, im not sure where your friends went but there is lots of night clubs in Dubai and Bars , Sasha was playing in the peppermint club , you have miles of beaches and lots of shopping centres etc.The country is tax free and the service was 10/10 in most places and people didn't expect a tip, In NYC you got treated differently depending on your Tips which pissed me off.

Your right the country is in a Mess ? its going to be for a long time as its still in early development stages Dubai wont be finished until early 2020 and believe you me its going to be the best place in the world to live, low crime , tax free , nice weather etc

I think Vegas is a big money pot , it attracts millions of tourist who dont know how to play Blackjack each year and most of them go home with nothing , if Dubai adapted the Vegas scene it would be in an even bigger mess. As for the 20 miles of Bill Boards you will find that they are trying to hide the construction and also promote sales and new developments, here in England they dont even give a shit about hiding new developments they just stick up 100ft of scaffolding and hire a few skips blocking the road off and only work on it from 10 till 3 , In dubai there working all night and day and you will never see the workmen f*ck around.

that's highly dependent on your desired lifestyle

i like to live in a place with real urban character and unique culture and not a contrived oil-dependent pleasure garden full of imported decadence

and when i say it's a mess I'm speaking architecturally, artistically, and urbanistically. There is no "city" - there are only buildings. Cities exist on many levels, not just what you can see from a skyline or from a penthouse window...

oil-dependent

I read a few months back that oil only makes up like 9% of Dubai's income, and that they are preparing for when oil runs out by building service jobs and such.
