My latest rap/hip hop discovery: MC Solaar
Generally I have hard on hate for rap and hip hop but this dude caught my attention.
Randomly saw one of his music videos on TV5. I only speak passable French, but his lyrics catch me. Plus his tunes have very old school rap and hip hop feel to it. Some of his tunes are very varied in terms of style. Inch'allah has weird middle eastern feel. Some of the other has soul and funk influence. Carpe Diem uses guitar riffs, etc.
Very creative.
Two of my fav tunes by him
Graham, Laur, translate?
hes been around for many many many years.
did you also just discover dj jazzy jeff & the fresh prince?

LOL MC Solar
I learned about him in my high school french classes, and then too later in my uni ones.
Whenever the topic of French (France) music or culture came up, there'd often be references to him.
i recall even both my highschool and some of my university french teachers bring in cassets and CDs (<<< LOL cassets!) of his to play for us.
its very non-violent and lacks the intensity (thug intensity???
) of NA rap/hip hop IMO.
ha, nice find!
I first heard of him from a CD compliation I bought well over 10 years ago called the Rebirth of Cool 5ive (I have a few others in the CD series and highly recommend them).
