pretty classic sound....when I get home I'll search the basic waveforms it is....Roland calls it "solid bass" or "tonite bass" or something

Mantisnl, be so nice and tell how U do that bass-thing with 3xosc It would be great help!!!

Posted by mantisnl on May-06-2002 16:11:

i do it by using a sample i have.. from an bass.. and by adding an 3xosc 2 it.. so.. u just have 2 b a bit creative.. thats all

Posted by Joi Lamusic on May-06-2002 16:14:

WEll..That 3xosc is quite new to me...So I don't know really how to use it So when I don't know the basics, it is hard to be creative...

I definately wouldn't call that a dirty bass sound... it sounds pretty smooth to me.

What song is that from? It sounds familiar.

Posted by MeiX on May-07-2002 10:19:

its from Cosmicman - Crystal Dreams (spelling?)

anyway, this sound is being used in lot of trance songs...

So, any ideas what waveform and filters to use for such bass sound???

Posted by lexiconavenue on May-07-2002 16:39:

im guessin it'd be a square wave for oscillator 1 and either another square or a triangle for oscillator 2 (if used @ all) and either a -24db lo band pass or -12db lbp filter.....to answer your question. :P

gonna check what the roland manual says.....

PCM A048...let's see now....

hmm well the PCM is called "solid bass" goes no deeper into waveforms...need a clean sample of it?

Posted by Joi Lamusic on May-07-2002 19:33:

Samples (clean samples) are always needed

for the bass leeches: solid bass

http://stuwww.kub.nl/~s216887/samples/SolidBass/

it's one sound sampled at three different octaves for max quality. 3 low ones, cuz who's gonna use a bass sound to play a melody? (well lots of people but they'll have to do with these samples). 44 khz 16 bit mono wav files.

Hey, thanx..

but it seems to be a little noisi??? should it be so???

Posted by Pjotr G on May-12-2002 20:06:

that's inherent to the patch. When I recorded it I checked that "silence" in the wav file was actually silence and not humming or beeping or noise, it was silent. And it should be, it's straight out of MC-307 into pc with everything muted except line in.

Here's a couple of hints regarding that bass sound. I usually use my old analog monster to dial it up.

Look up what Pulse Width means in any electroacoustic book. It has the effect of changing the timbre of a square wave. Important for basses in general, and for this sound.

It's also in usually in 2 octaves, although it might not be in this case. Each one would have a different PW setting.
Finally, you have to have the right filter. Unfotunately, the 3xosc doesn't really let you adjust the pulse width (unless you load an appropriate sample for the question mark), and the stock Fruityloops filters take quite some post-EQing to get this sound.

For 3xosc try a rounded saw for the top octave and a square for the bottom octave. Select INV for the square. Also enable the the log decay light in the CUT section.
