The original release was amazing with the PVD, Original & Matt Darey Mixes. I really liked the Gouryella Remix of '1999' and also the Marc et Claude Remix

But jesus, how many more fucking remixers? has Sean Tyas done it yet? LOL

Hmm, this is a nice topic to ask the Djs something.

I amm a hobby producer, but i do want to dj in the future and will buy some equipment for it this summer.

My question is, why don't djs play the old tracks instead of remixing it over and over again? Infact most djs play only new things. Old things are like taboo. So what is up with that?

and ya that clip was really boring...

all that whistling, hollering and hooting (not to mention reaching for the lasers) tells me that there are some out there that enjoy this track.

i'd like to hear a better sample/whole tune before i make any judgement. and we're probably way out of context judging something by a 5 min sample. no idea what was played before/after this and when during the night it was dropped. might've (not saying it did) worked at the time.

Mainly because well known old tracks are just that: well known. DJs love dropping a familiar track with an unfamiliar mix. It gets a good reaction but simultaneously has the effect of a killer new tune. DJs have no problem dropping unknown old tracks.

I think this is probably the best explanation, but think it should be noted that there are a lot of guys out there who will indeed just drop a classic in all its original glory from time to time - and my experience has been that it always seems to go off at least as well, if not much better, than a lot of the new mixes.

Agreed. There are two types of new mixes- some by producers who've genuinely found something new to do with an old track, and some by producers who just want to use the famous bit for effect. Unfortunately, the majority of remixes fall into this second category.

I've been trying to think of new versions of classics I've even really played, and the only one I can really think of is that Muskat Nuss mix of "Greece 2000" - I think Nils Noa did one a year or two back that I also thought was rather decent, but I'm not sure. Haven't heard it in ages.

The Buttrich mix of "Mad Monks on Zinc" was also in my bag for a bit, but nothing too special (and the "classic-ness" of MMoZ may well be disputed).

well I'm starting up as well, only one 'serious' gig so far, but i also think its massively ridiculous. If I do get anywhere some day the date on the record is definitely not ever effecting my judgment.

What the hell is this?! Please tell me it's an amateur remix he played by mistake...

+1, I really cant understand why DJs (be it pro or amateur) rarely play the older stuff. Its about what a set sounds like, not when the record was released.

Hell if I was a DJ and was going to play an old track, I'd damn well play the original (or an underrated old remix) and be damned to the new versions, unless they're something special, which 99% are most certainly not.

those two aren't necessarily mutually exclusive...

in most cases old stuff sounds very different to new stuff; not musically but in terms of production dynamics. for instance back in the old days of trance the mixdowns were alot simpler & the kicks alot softer, the highs less sparkly & everything not-quite-so-perfectly balanced.. if you're going to *JUST* play old stuff then that shouldn't be a problem, but combining new & old has the potential to sound awkward unless you can pull it off properly...

this is the main reason you get artists like sean tyas/greg downey etc doing remixes of older tunes that barely change anything musically.. they want to play well-known tunes but the originals don't merge well amongst their usual stuff because the kicks are softer & the mixdowns aren't as populated.. etc.

of course that could lead us onto a whole other debate about dynamics within a set.. and how some djs manage it better than others. that and there are plenty of old tunes that still don't sound dated so by no means does this argument apply all the time my current dj wallet spans a good few years at least
