Headphone Noise

I just recently started using headphones(sony Mdr700) at night for music. For some reason I get some strange high pitched itchy noise in the background when there is no sound playing. If I raise the gain the noise goes up to. Im pretty sure this has something to do with my equipment. I have my headphones connected to my mixer and mixer connected to the computer.

i dont know what an itchy noise is

if it is a high pitched TONE, i honestly have nfi what that is. if it is static, then it is interference - most likely on the cables or from the ground. the easiest way to troubleshoot the later problem is to try turning things off.

its tinnitus!! u have played too loud, those cans can destroy your ears if u use them more than a couple of hours. get some open air headfones instead. im glad i changed in time

It's probably just noise from the mixer. Buy a better one or just ignore it.

Why the hell would I have Tinnitus? Can you explain a bit more before shooting out serious things like that?

I can hear the noise coming from my monitors as well if I put my ears close enough to the tweeter during silence.

Yeah it's interference, my computers inbuilt soundcard does this and you can hear a faint beep when you click the mouse too. Doesn't happen on my Audigy though.

Yea it makes sense now! Well I should be buying a good soundcard within the next 2 months so that problem will hopefully be solved.

it might not be your soundcard at all... if your computer has a noisy ground, you will have the same problem with a new card...

I have Sony MDR-7506 and I know exactly what you're talking about.

In my case, I have a keyboard with back lit keys. If I put my hand or the headphone cord on or near the keyboard when the keys are lit up I get a high pitched annoying noise too. Its only really noticeable when nothing is playing in the headphones, but that I guess depends on how much interference you're getting.

Like others said, try relocating some of your cables.

As far as for these headhpones being hard on the ears - I agree. When strong bass hits at high volume my ears feel like they're in a vacuum or something Are open-air headphones much better in that respect?

im pretty sure its just noise floor being amplified! every electrical piece of hardware will get some type of noise when making a gain on the sound without anything being played.

Sounds like interference, presumably the SB Live is a PCI card so its inside the machine? And it will have no kind of shielding at all. I used to have terrible background noise when I was using onboard sound, I would get a high-pitched whining come through my headphones when my CD drive span up! Now Ive got an external firewire soundcard (Focusrite Saffire) and its total silence...
