Question Résumé advice.

Basically I'm looking more for examples than advice - I'm hoping to apply for a few teaching jobs in the coming weeks/months, and need to finish my résumé sometime in the next two to three weeks in order to apply for a couple different graduate opportunities by their deadlines (one of which is getting paid to study in India for 8 weeks - something I'd very much like to spend my fall doing).

Effectively I'm just looking for any good resources you all have for creating a professional résumé, or if any of you would be willing to let me have a look at your own résumé as an example I would really appreciate it as well.

Cheers.

HOW CAN YOU HAVE TWO ACCENTS. I DON'T KNOW HOW TO SAY IT

If you wait till tomorrow you can take a look at mine. Some pro consultants are going to be reviewing it for me tomorrow, so it'll be polished up.

Cool. Anyone willing to share their résumé with me should either PM me or toss it off to me at [email protected] (so as to avoid people posting them in public)

And thanks loads to those of you willing to entertain the notion - I'm absolutely terrified because this is the first time I've ever even had to consider the notion of creating a résumé.

And Sam - that was just the way it was spelled on Wiki

Posted by iammesol on Feb-12-2008 06:18:

and how have you not created a resume before? I've never been denied a job because I've always turned one in. Get that shit done, and get your impression won!

Posted by bas on Feb-12-2008 06:21:

Resumes should look different depending on the job you're looking for Sam my boy. A teacher's resume would look vastly different than that of someone looking for a tech position.

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Feb-12-2008 06:22:

you should write lots of resumes and custom-build them according to the position.

for something like teaching, a government job (?) i wouldve thought there'd be stuff like selection criteria rather than it all depending on the resume. good luck.

With that said Bas, you are indeed correct.

I should have added, and some jobs (working at a deli) don't require a resume at all

"Two of the most salient aspects of the Chicago House scene are its diversity and it's consistent quality. In an atmosphere that has spawned the careers of so many legendary DJ's and producers, and continues to see incredible young talent develop on a nightly basis, a DJ can feel like there is an immense amount of competition. For Wisconsin born Rob Turner, it's not about the competition, but rather the inspiration he can draw from each and every set he hears played out.

Drawing on musical influences ranging from the Talking Heads to the Beastie Boys, the Sneaker Pimps to Sarah Vaughan, and from Phish to Sasha & Digweed, Rob picked up his first piece of wax when he was just 13 years old.

11 years later, Rob has found his way through all manner of house, techno, tech-house, trance, and progressive records on his way to honing his signature hypnotic sound. This past year in particular, Rob's laid-back opening sets have garnered significant praise within the Chicago House scene. Taking his influence from DJ's like Jimmy Van M, Lee Burridge, and Danny Howells, this year has seen Rob booked to provide the opening vibe for artists like Los Anegeles own Kazell, Soma Records Funk D'Void, and Armada Records artist Mathew Dekay.

Beyond his opening sets, in the past two years Rob has been fortunate enough to make several appearances at Chicago clubs Vision and Four, Milwaukee's Room 434 and Lemon Lounge, he has held down a monthly residency at Appleton's Ravens Lounge, aired several guest mixes on ETN.fm and Chicago's own legendary WNUR, and has lent his chilled sounds to various other parties and afterhours, earning almost as much praise for his deep and tech house afterhours sets as for his opening efforts.

Between his growing reputation as one of Chicago's finer opening DJ's and the clear passion, energy, and potential that he exudes when he's behind the decks, the future looks bright indeed. for Mr. Turner."

imo

Just replace "DJ" and "Sets" with "Teacher" and "Teaching" brau

i remember monster.com having some pretty solid resume advice. i could list my pointers, but i doubt most of them would be relevant for a teaching position. Some wisdom i can share is that you should definitely use 'action' words in the resume describing what you can do for them. A resume isn't a way to show off, it's a way to show how you fit that job. tailor that shit exactly for the job. for teaching you should probably use words like communicate, instruct, develop, foster, etc... to describe things you've done.

good luck.

So right. The resume I have for the private sector is 2 pages (one with my crap and one with references). The latest one (that would have done Rob no good) is for the Gov't and is over 10 pages long. Many KSA's were addressed and formatting was as required.

i gots both!

Posted by RJT on Feb-12-2008 20:24:

Thanks for all the input guys - I do realize that I need to tailor each resume to the position it's intended, but I guess I just wanted ideas of where to start.

I'm basically trying to get my personalized "template" (so to speak) resume finished so I can have the necessary information ready to go, and just kind of fill in the subjective "blanks."
