kevin shiu
nicky delgado
julian chow
danny taylor
tazix (don't know if he still plays out or not)
jimmy chu
amanda rude
and yes, just look under any event/rave to see names of locals, they would pretty much be the it for the vancouver djs

WEAK

WEAAAAAAAAK (especially you Apri)

Vancouver actually has, you know, trance djs who play out every week, and make tracks that are getting played by big djs around the world. Im talking about Jimmy Vallance and Digital Over (who was mentioned in some little footnote). Its scary how much better they are than any of the people listed, with the exception of Mr Kevin Shiu. Respect. Respect for Chris @ Organix as well.

If you arent producing tracks that sound ok and get played by other djs, forget it. You dont make the top 10. Im talking guys like dave armstrong, jeff daniels, hirshee, alverez, Lianne... these are guys actually making tracks, maybe even touring, because they dj too, and they dont trainwreck, because they've been at it for more than 5 years.

They didnt throw the parties, they didnt get booked because they were hot, they were quality people. Thats a top dj.

PS DT left so hes out

Prog - Kevin Shiu
Psy - Chris from Organix
House - Various (Im not wading into that one)
Speed Garage - Scotty Oh (When he's not in Jail) or Major Josh
Breaks - Clockwork is pretty good. Sure, lets take him.
DNB - NO #^%^ CLUE
Techno - Miss Innocent

Btw, there's like 10 local DJs, that's it, they all play at the same events all the time because that's all promoters do, they book their friends for every single event. Just look at any event and that's it. We have no headliners that headline anywhere but here. (there are a few decent ones that do participate regularily and are in the lime light) but there are also a few buried in obscurity because of their inability or refusal to play politics and the limited number of events and slots at those events.

Agree to disagree. We don't book based on friendship. Granted, knowing someone on a personal level can't hurt, but we book DJs who don't trainwreck AND sell tickets or promote our events. Call that politics if you like; I call it showing initiative, being hardworking, and earning your pay.

Tristan/Digital Over is a perfect example of a DJ who is a sick producer and has been recognized by international artists for that talent but is not above working hard in all the respects I have mentioned.

There's plenty of friends who I'd love to book, but exhibit none of these qualities or feel they have paid their dues and no longer need to put in that effort. Any DJ you see on our flyer is there not just because of technical ability, but because they pull their weight.

Heh, I was on a rant. Take that with a huge grain of salt. The atmosphere here puts me on edge. I have since deleted the post.

Tristan is a great example. Works hard, does all he can. He produces, DJs, has a versatile style but does well in the categories he's known for. His productions are getting better every day and it's earning him the acclaim he is working hard to obtain!

Jimmy is doing fairly well. He seems to be able to get the crowds buzzing. His productions are improving. He's still young yet.

Danny Taylor has done very well for himself so far. We'll see if he can catch another break (or sh

I've only seen her play once, but I was impressed at the time with Mirka. But that was ages ago.

Kevin Shiu is great. Much respect.

I don't get out enough to know anyone worth mentioning beyond that beyond a single showing, which is unfair to base any comments upon for or against them. A bad night or a lucky night, either way, could bias any barely valid opinion I'd have to share on locals.

Last time I checked his style is somewhat like J00fs. True?

so I have a question, since nobody has brought up Shiloh. They are probably two of the biggest guys this area has produced, yet I have never heard anyone in Vancouver talk about them! I have been a huge follower of them since 2004 when they started being hosted on www.hybridized.org , and to this day they are still one of my favourites. With dozens of releases on big labels like Baroque, Electrofly, Nascent, and their own label Floppy Discs, plus tracks on compilations like The Politics of Dancing 2, GU 28, and Renaissance 7, why aren't they big here around their home?? Their album Bleed was even voted the best album of the month in DJ Mag: http://www.shilohmusic.ca/images/djmag-article.jpg !! I was expecting to see them numerous times when I came out here, but I haven't heard of a single show yet

1. I doubt they live here anymore, or have lived here in awhile. I could be wrong. My guess is they left.

2. They don't DJ that much, they focus more on productions, but as DJs, they don't seem to be in huge demand globally to my knowledge.

3. They did a gig here I think in 2006 or 2007, with Australia's Luke Chable. I was unable to attend, but I heard that like 10-20 people in TOTAL showed up for the whole event. I don't know if both Shiloh members attended, but I heard there was some tag team action going on and a lot of heavy drinking due to being unimpressed with the turn out. This may all be completely wrong, but if my very poor memory serves correct, at least some or all of this is true.

This is an cool discussion - it's interesting how different everyone's list would be to mine.

Here is my list of favorite "club" DJs in Vancouver. they play a range from house to electro to loopy detroit style techno. Timeline, Sage and Male Model machine have some great productions under their belts.

DJ Timeline (Commercial Electro)

Siavash KingXL (Loopy Techno)

Sage (Electro and Techno)

Male Model Machine (Electro and Aceeeeed)

Luke McKeehan (Good Deep house)

Jay Tripwire (Good Deep House)

Andy Clockwork (House and Breaks)

yep they do. here's a response I just got from justin:

"Yeah, we very rarely play in Vancouver. We have a quarterly residency at Hush in Victoria though. So, we're there every few months. I'm not sure when we're scheduled in there again, but you could always take the ferry over for a nice weekend on the Island some time when we're playing.

Cheers man, and thanks for listening.

J"

that's sad to hear that only ~20 people went for Chable and Shiloh.. quite honestly I'd rather see them than almost anyone (except the likes of Holden and Warren right now)! They are so ridiculously talented both in producing and DJing, so it is too bad to hear that they aren't that big in their local community

i think shiloh played at gorg-o-mish last summer. they've written some great tracks.

local fave dj's (producers as well)

Myshell http://www.djmyshell.com

Sage http://djsage.com/

Timeline http://www.djtimeline.com

John Morgan http://powerplantmusic.ca/

Shiloh's remix of Son Kite - Colours is amazing. They should play out more! I'll go for sure!

Posted by calex on Feb-16-2008 03:14:

ya, they play @ hush every 3 or 4 months...have had some epic shows there...next time they play there you should check it out...

other points,
i have never seen them play alone...always collin and justin...even when collin busted up his hand a couple of hours before they played here once...
not sure how true that chable story is...they played together in vic and the club was packed...

not really sure why they do not get any play from folks in van...

i know the promotion company that i am involved with was the first to bring them to the island...same with micah...and joel armstrong...a couple of more names that i have never seen on van flyers either...joel is based in van and micah in calgary...

Posted by endure on Feb-16-2008 03:38:

In my opinion, the best producers I have ever heard are Ulrich Schnauss and Micah. I'd do anything to see him here and have even talked to some of the promoters here about him, but again it seems there is little interest for these type of people. Sultan and Max Graham are the only two 'big' canadians I've heard come out here!

Posted by AquaYak on Feb-16-2008 07:51:

We've had every big canadian so far - deadmau5, preach, max, hawtin, noah pred, hatiras, the resident dj for the guv.

What about Greg Benz, Micah, Digital Witchcraft (I guess mainly Ned now), MV (Martin Villeneuve), MD (Marco Di Carlo, and Damien Heck??

Also, Powerplant (John Morgan and Kiki Stewardson) are from Vancouver I think.. have they ever done anything? I don't know of any releases by them for the past couple years, but they sure were hot for a few years with tracks like Blame and Turn It Into Gold

I figured. Usually you're on top of these things. You're like a trance encyclopedia.
