Thanks Beatport

Well done on upping prices, assholes.

I know this happened for the UK last year, but for me anyway, in Ireland, I could still buy stuff in US Dollars, making Beatport nice and cheap. They have removed this now and directly transferred prices into euros, so what was $1.99 is now 1.99.

Similarly their .wav file 'handling fee' has gone up from $1 to 1.

So now, a standard 1.99 track with handling -
$1.99 + $1 = $2.99
1.99 + 1 = 2.99 = $4.34

So the price has gone up about 40%, which is completely ludicrous and cant be explained away by any rights issues, cost of living increases or general inflation.

Fuck you Beatport, fuck you very much. Trackitdown again for me. Although trackitdowns prices were slightly higher under the old scheme it worked out the same as they dont charge .wav handling.

I know it wont get my anywhere, but theres a stinky email been sent.

This has been normal for the rest of Europe already for a long time.
Very idiotic to have this double standard, also because you can buy the stuff in dollars with a simple usa proxy server

Posted by THE_Chris on Feb-13-2008 17:26:

Yeah its stupid, I think Ireland was just forgotten when that happened, but its still not good enough.

I realise I wont get anywhere with this, but I've just sent them this spiel anyway, so we'll see what happens.

quote:

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have long been a fan of Beatport and have happily paid hundreds of euros to yourselves and up to now have been delighted with the service and products that I have gotten.

However, I would like to inquire why prices have gone up by 45% overnight.

I live in Ireland and up until yesterday I could happily buy a track in US dollars. Buying in another currency is perfectly normal and is often the 'done thing' over the Internet. Unfortunately, I cannot do that any more and all prices are now displayed in euros.

I would like to point out that I do not mind this in principle. Displaying prices in my own currency is more user friendly and transparent. However, the prices have not been converted into euros, and have simply had the $ sign replaced by the euro sign. This results in substantial, and in my view, unacceptable price rises of the order of 40-50%. Taking one example of a standard purchase - a '1.99' track with '1.00' .wav file handling.

Old system - $1.99 + $1 = $2.99
New system - 1.99 + 1 = 2.99 = $4.34

That amounts to an overnight increase of 45%, which in my view is extortion. A rise of this magnitude cannot be explained by any label rights issues, cost of living increases or general inflation. Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of buying music. I like to support the artists and labels that bring us our music. In this regard, I do not download any illegal singles as I know the damage that can do. I am trusted to be on several record company promo lists also. Thus, I make a point of buying a download, or failing that buying a CD or vinyl.

So if possible, I would like an explanation of the reasons behind this price rise and some information on when the US Dollar prices will be converted into Euro prices, rather than the $ sign simply being replaced by the euro sign.

Although I have always been a big fan of Beatport due to your previously excellent prices, current unparalleled music selection and commendable customer service, I regret to inform you that if this issue is not resolved, I will be forced to take my business elsewhere.

Yours sincerely,

Be thankful that you live in a country with a stable currency. At the start of the year the Rand Dollar exchange rate was R6.95 to $1, now today the dollar R7.65. A $1.99 track cost me R13.83 in January. It now cost me R15.22

Beatport has now gotten so expensive with this change that to buy a release with 3/4 tracks on it now costs the same as the vinyl equivilent, sometimes more .

Nothing will happen : it's like that since they launched Beatport v3, 1.5 years ago.

Baller.

It must suck to be buying .wav overseas.

Posted by Kris G on Feb-14-2008 07:16:

Whats the average price of WAVs now on BP, and vs. Trackitdown? Grr hacks me off as I don't want to buy 320s now only to have to buy again in a few years on WAV

and the reason i m glad for being in greece!!

Posted by Jarvmeister on Feb-14-2008 12:08:

Let's get back on topic.

This gets better. I live in the UK, and I too noticed the change to euros.

But now it's changed to pounds - which is an even bigger price hike, an increase of 100% approximately on the original price in dollars.

I cannot see how, say for three tracks you can pay 6 (An original and 2 remixes), which is the same or often more than you used to pay for vinyl. This is pure greed on the part of Beatport.

Sometimes people choose to look towards file sharing solutions and it's the fault of the distributors......

Goodbye Beatport. C U N T S.

Posted by Watts on Feb-14-2008 12:31:

Honestly this is just payback for all the years my expenses have been jacked up by overseas delivery for vinyl.

I call it justice.
