John Digweed - Transitions Vol. 4 [Renaissance]

John Digweed concludes the first chapter of his Transitions series with a bang

Since its launch Transitions has become one of - if not - the most anticipated releases in the compilation calendar; over the past two years its single disc, twice-yearly format has provided dance music fans a regular, contemporary snapshot of John. Now the first chapter in the Transitions series reaches its conclusion with the highly anticipated fourth volume.

This was perhaps the hardest one yet, says Digweed, The proximity between releases meant each new volume was strongly influenced by its predecessor - as we moved from one to the other they had to relate and make sense.

So, a real challenge. Just how did John go about tackling it?

Ive developed the amount of tracks and layering over the series, he elaborates, And weve taken it to the next level with this latest volume, its the most intense and intrinsic yet, which meant replacements, additions, editing and a lot of time consuming assessments and re-assessments.

Over the course of 22 tracks and 73 minutes John weaves a unique musical thread. From favourites such as Ink & Needle, Guy J and Pig & Dan through to welcome debuts from Henry Saiz, Myers Briggs or Soliquid, all are concisely constructed in the mix to the point where 3 are often playing at anyone time. Infact, due the resulting complexity, John decided to re-structure the trackmark points to better reflect the more developed passages and so 22 records became 10 (see full tracklist below), as he elaborates, In trackmarking this way I am able to highlight the unique qualities of the mix. Whilst it hopefully retains that signature Digweed sound, Ive used modern production techniques to create an album thats unlike anything youll ever hear me do in a club.

And the future? Lets keep it about this latest volume for now, John affirms, Otherwise I think Id be doing it a disservice! We couldnt agree more: Transitions Vol.4 is one of the most original compilations youll hear this year and a fitting finale to the series in its current guise.

He seems to release new Transitions pretty quickly... Well I have Vol. 2 & 3 in my collection so let's hear this one when it comes out.

I hope it will be better than vol 2 and 3. Vol 1 was amazing because of its genious track selection and variety of sounds and moods. The rest were just dull..

That's because they're released bi-yearly or however that's phrased.

Semi-annually.

Posted by bas on Feb-17-2008 19:08:

Quasi-bi-annually.

Does that mean it goes both ways?

Until it hitted a wall.

I'd hit Transitions.

Very curious to see what type of thematic guidelines this one will be designed around.

I know the last one had a more 'peak-time' orientation to it, so it will be interesting to see what he does with this volume.

Didn't really find myself terribly interested in what volumes 1 and 3 had to offer, although I found 2 superb upon the very first listen.

whoa, quick indeed

Fuck yeah!!!

To those of you who think it's been too quick, Vol. 3 was released in September, that's a full 6 months! Perhaps it feels fast because it was so fucking good it's still getting heavy rotation on our players

vortex time, bebe.

There were a couple of good tracks on 3, but overall I couldn't really get into it.

Posted by refuge on Feb-18-2008 02:23:

Digweed's GU mixes > Transitions mixes. All of the Transitions mixes have been good, but nothing near the quality of Sydney, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Stark Raving Mad, MMII, Bedrock and Fabric 20. That said, I'm looking forward to the fourth installment of Transitions, but I don't have high expectations of it.

Looking forward to this one, though I said that about Vol.3 and it didn't really work for me.

Posted by lindt on Feb-18-2008 03:09:

I agree that some of the previous Transitions have not been the best but I will definitely be checking this out and hoping for greatness.

Posted by RJT on Feb-18-2008 03:11:

I've given all the Transitions discs a shot, but really have failed to get into any for a significant amount of time.

I liked the first a fair bit, loads of good tunes and solid flow - but it wore itself out on me fairly quick.

In general I just think I'm tiring of both Sasha and John. The GU years were a lot of fun, but they just don't do it for me like they used to.

I for one really enjoyed #3 (especially compared to 1 and 2)... the genres presented were very diverse and all across the board, but somehow, it worked and never really got dull, apart from maybe the 3rd quarter of it. And it had a fantastic finale too.

Quote from Digweed:

"Hi All

Just finished Transitions Vol 4
Really happy with it
Loads of edits and layering of tracks

Hope you like it

Out in April

Podcast up soon to give you a rough idea of whats on it
but you really need the whole mix as it really builds.

John"

Fantastic news! I won't have to renew my Ambien prescription after all.
