Review: Family day @ basement - Who's Your Daddy?

had some fun with this one...

What can I say? Addy is the man. Having him back doing mornings is the coming-again of a legend, knowing what he did at zone all those years. Sound, vibe and energy was off-the-hook. Had a freakin' blast, and it seemed as though everyone else did too. Sorry to hear about barbina's experience--was addy on? Did you HEAR the tunes? wow! Love the arabic-influenced tracks to give the set a stylized feel.

Some sound issues with sound cutting in and out, but seemed to get addressed quickly. The highs only pierced my ear drums once or twice before they figured that out too. Place was rammed and then started to thin out quick during El Duran's set...i think those ppl went to zone. Perhaps 5am @ The Basement will poise to be the warmer for a longer day at zone for peeps?

I hit up zone afterwards as well, and the vibe was fantastic...i wasn't as into Deko-Ze's set, but ppl were having a riot and all smiles around. Can't wait to hear tribal in there again. Hmm, maybe tribal at basement??

So, I've been saying I would check this place out eventually - and the time came on Monday morning. It was hysterical (for me) to actually be able to walk to an afterhours, when in the past it was usually a 60+ km commute one way just to get there. lol

We got there around 6am to a relatively busy room, full of lots of familiar faces. I really liked the space. Pretty rough around the edges, but the layout was awesome - and the sound was better than I expected it to be. The only thing I really disliked was the black lights directly in front of the dj booth, but I guess you find them in most afterhours venues. The crowd had great energy and vibes, reminded me a lot of Sonic - non pretentious, dancing with each other and respecting their space.

Addy was laying it down so fucking good from the minute we walked in there. Not sure how long he played, but I was so impressed with what I heard - in track selection, but mostly the diversity in his set. He ranged from his signature bangin' tribal house, but got so deep and soulful at times I just stopped dancing at times to take it all in. Honestly, the best I've heard from Addy - ever. We caught a bit of Rudee as well, and liked what I heard. Kept momentum going right until we left, around 11:30.

Overall, I think this place has great potential to last. It definitely needs a few tweaks here and there, and a lot more promo to get things rolling. I can't do the early morning parties as often as I used to, but I'll definitely be back when I decide to again.

There's a huge 5 alarm fire at Queen and Bathurst this morning. I'd be surprised if your precious basement weren't damaged!

Hey, it's not about the building. It's about the DJs...ok and the sound system...and the ambiance...and the layout... damn. Oh no! My precious basement!

oops wrong thread

Btw, Jeff--great seeing you man, and thanks for the chat. Been a while since we danced it up hard like that! Being a simple walk from basement would be dangerous 4 me. Glad I have the drive to keep me honest with my clubbing.

Barbina--Rudee rocked my socks a few weeks ago, my first or second visit there. I was sold after that--but everyone has their off day i guess...like dj Ping who opened that fateful morning--ugh. I'm still gonna give ping another chance. I'll check him out at Film.

I guess it's like any place finding its legs... Addy is a sure bet though. His residency starts in March, apparently. So far, good times for me... but if you're looking for longevity, you may wanna do the ol basement then zone configuration.

Does anyone know if basement got nailed in that fire today?

Wow, that's quite the review Jeff.
With this kind of review.... and Addy spinning... looks like I will have to check this place out.

I was actually a little concerned yesterday! lol. Major bummer about such a historic part of the city being lost though. WOW. And the pictures are just unreal.

A friend of mine Matt Brennan is getting a slot at basement this Sunday. I'm so proud of the guy! Not just because he is my friend, but because he has a really good ear. I hope he nails the crowd good.
