he shoots, he scores!

i never cease to be amazed what technology can do these days!

A MISSILE launched from an American navy ship has successfully struck a dying US spy satellite passing 210km over the northern Pacific Ocean.

"The missile's been launched and (it was) a successful intercept,'' a Pentagon source said.

It happened just after 10.30pm (1430 AEDT) today, but full details were not immediately available, another defence official said.

The goal in this first-of-its-kind mission was not just to hit the satellite but to obliterate a tank aboard the spacecraft carrying 450kg of a toxic fuel called hydrazine.

US officials have said the fuel would pose a potential health hazard to humans if it landed in a populated area.

Australia was one of the countires alerted as being potentially at risk.

Although the odds of that were small even if the Pentagon had chosen not to try to shoot down the satellite, it was determined that it was worth trying to eliminate even that small chance.

Officials said it might take a day or longer to know for sure if the toxic fuel was blown up.

Russia and China had expressed concern about the operation. The Russian Defence Ministry said it could be used as cover to test a new space weapon.

But Washington insisted the operation was aimed purely at preventing people being harmed by the satellite's fuel load.

Well what do you know, the world really is going to end.

It's below a normal orbit level, which is why the Pentagon approved it. The debris will be small enough to burn up in the atmosphere.

asteroids don't go on an orbit around earth

just saw the pentagon video report. What a load of bullshit

shaky video, they lose sight of the missile, then the next shot of the "intercept" explosion is non shaky and cristal clear like straight out from a hollywood studio

Yeah right. And they never landed on moon either.

A blurry cloudy shaky shot, and then a cristal clear steady shot. You don't need to be a film director to see the obvious: that was not actual footage of the interception. Since you mentioned it, some of the moon landings footage have been clearly demonstrated as fake. You, believe what you want to believe. America loves you and acts in your interest

If the Usa are so concerned over a few liters of "toxic" propellant and mod an army battleship to launch a ( non-explosive )galactic missile, how come they don't feel concerned about daily US pollution ?

Because that was the satellite that commanded the destruction of the twin towers, shot president Kennedy, and even broadcasted that fake video of those American astronauts landing on the moon.

Oh, it also fathered three children. Among them, Tom Cruise. It had to be destroyed.

You have an overwhelming sense of humour only topped by highly accurate sarcasm and attention to detail. Maybe you should stop eating clowns for breakfast. Here instead, baked especially for you

I can't really defend the shakiness of the first shot, but I could see it being tricky to clearly film a rocket going extremely fast with a hand-held camera.

However, that doesn't mean that the "clarity" of the second shot means it's fake. Its not very hard to smoothly track a satellite with a telescope. People do it all the time, and I'm sure that the pentagon would be able to film through a telescope with relative ease.

Well they certainly didn't shoot it from the ship ( boat ) itself. It is impossible anyway to get to get a hand held steady shot when zooming towards stratospheric heights

Filming it from a telescope means, you have to preset the shot, aka give in advance the exact coordinates of the interception

they're shooting down a moving satellite, there's a good chance they have the coordinates of interception
