The Office (US version) appreciation thread

Ok So I have Netflix now and I get to watch all 3 seasons online and I must say it's the best writing I've ever seen. I'm halfway through season 3 now and I absolutely can't wait 'till April 10th. Steve Carell's acting is just priceless. Please share your feelings, thank you.

hmmm mmmm little comment nnnn

Absolutely love it - can't wait for the fucking writers to get back to work.

I find Steve Carell attractive.

Yep me neither. Is anyone familiar with the UK version though, like.....Ian. How would you compare the two, I want to watch it but I think I want to finish season three before I do so.

All the Brits & others who were watching the import before the U.S. version will inevitably call the U.S. version shit and champion the obvious superiority of the British version - those people are full of shit.

Don't get me wrong, I really, really enjoyed the British version - but a lot of the humor I get from the show has to do with U.S. cultural references that are just far more relevant to me than most of what's in the British version, so in the end I prefer the U.S. version pretty much solely for the obvious cultural reason: I'm from the U.S.

Yeh I was thinking that too, specially knowing the nature of the show I might be left in the dark for half the jokes. I'm still going to check it out though, thanks for the heads up.

Nice, you made it through the first 3 great seasons...now prepare for it to start sucking.

Jesus, the last season before the strike just got so dumb. Every funny joke had 2 awkward moments that were out of character and didnt fit, stupid plot twists...gah, makes me so angry. They had a great thing going but they started abandoning character fidelity for the sake of the plot which doesnt work for me...

Posted by RJT on Feb-21-2008 05:50:

I didn't see any of the new season prior to the strike, so I've got no clue as to its quality.

Seriously? I thought Season 4 has been awesome. The opening scene of the season opener alone was the funniest moment in the entire series for me.

I can't say whether you'll like it or not. It was still entertaining, but like I said, I can't stand when they write something for a character they've built over three seasons, to where you feel like you really have a good handle on who that character is, and then all of a sudden they're doing something ridiculous that just doesnt fit.

Example...finer things club. Jim would never lie about reading a book. Didn't make any sense.

Posted by wotyzoid on Feb-21-2008 05:54:

Damn that sucks to know. On the funniest moment note, nothing has beat the opening scene on an episode on season one where Jim does the "updog" joke and then Michael tries it and falls flat on hit face 4 times, just brilliant.

The Secret [2.13]

[Start episode, Jim at Pams desk]
Jim: Nothing much whats up with you?
Pam: (laughs) I cannot believe I fell for that
[Michael walks in]
Michael: Ah hah, what? What, wheres the funny? Give it to me
Jim: Um, is it me or does it smell like updog in here?
Michael: Whats updog?
Jim: Nothing much, whats up with you?
[Michael laughs]
Michael: Wow, I walked right into that ah... thats brilliant
[Michael trying to tell the joke later]
Michael: Hey Stanley, is that jacket made of updog?
Stanley: Im on the phone
Michael: (Awkward silence, then walks away)
[Try #2 in the break room, as Ryan pours coffee]
Michael: Mmm what flavor coffee is that... updog?
Ryan: What?
Michael: I dunno, nothing, whats up with you?
Ryan: Huh?
Michael: No... (realizes joke didn't work) damn it... (leaves room)
[Try #3, cut to Kevin after Michael tries to tell the joke]
Kevin: What does that mean?
Michael: What does what mean?
Kevin: That thing you just said?
Michael: Forget it (walks away, sees Dwight)
Michael: Dwight! Hey is it me, or does this place smell like updog?
Dwight: Whats updog?
Michael: GOTCHA! HAHAHAHA oh God (realizes he didnt do the joke right). Crap.. (awkward silence). Nothing, how are you doing?
Dwight: (smiling) Good! How are you doing?
(Jim mouths "So close" the camera)

now THAT is good writing

The funny thing is that I fell for this exact joke about two or three years ago.

Took me almost thirty minutes before I finally figured out that I had been served. LOL

i quite liked the american version, but it's just so fucking obvious.....
the beauty of the UK version is that it was originally billed as "a documentary about a slough based paper merchants", pretty much all the actors were unknowns, and there was a genuine feeling of "is this real?"

Gareth Keenan > Dwight
although Michael is more Tim than Tim is.

I have the first couple seasons on DVD..I need to get the 3rd.

My personal favorite!

garbage the cat was pretty sweet. but the 4th season was weaker than the previous, except the first season, that was their 'ape the UK version' season and it sucked. they tried to make michael greasy and mean which was a mistake.

that was more in line with the UK version as it features a different type of humor. the boss is more of a creep, but just as loveable. michael is just unbelievably stupid.

basically you can enjoy the US version without having to pay attention. the UK gives more back to the viewer in the fact it has a set length and story arc (it wanders less) but you *have* to pay attention. its kinda like Arrested Development in that way|

Huh?

Think you got your characters mixed up!

I've never been more attached to a TV show. MST3k would be a close second but I still give the edge to 'The Office'.

'Spaced' rules all.

combines why both the british and american versions are funny, in a stonery package|
