-- Lyrics or no Lyrics? That is the question
Let's do another unscientific poll here.
Do you prefer your Trance tunes with or without lyrics?
Personally, I like it better when it's instrumental. The occasional voice samples or voices used as musical instruments can be really great, but having someone singing over the music usually doesn't do it for me.
Whaddaya think?
MH
Depends!
yes, it does depend.
It's just like back in the day with Eurodance tunes... Sometimes you'd have an awesome song and then some idiot comes in and starts rapping and ruins the whole thing..
.... and then there are other tracks like that where if there was no rapping the song would suck..
same goes for trance... Sarah McLachlan's silence wouldn't go anywhere without vocals, right?

Or Bt's Dreaming, and Bt's Godspeed. They are pretty similar, but I can't say which is better, although one has vocals and the other doesn't.
.peAce.
But many of these songs with full lyrics tend a lot more toward euro-dance stuff than real trance, no?
Now, we are coming on the subject of what exactly is a trance tune and what is dance of even pop...
argh! Too many hard to answer questions here!
Many bid DJs now think that trance has degenerated a lot into dance and pop in the last couple of years. Anyone agree with that?
MH
Depends on the song, one reason why I liked trance was there would be less emphasis on vocals than the house I used to listen to.. Some of the vocals in the house genre got ridiculuously cheesy.. anyways, sometimes vocals work and sometimes it doesn't, but I don't think you can say vocals or no vocals is automatically good or bad...
latez...
I didn't know BT- Godspeed had lyrics in it...
and i agree it depends on the song and how well the lyrics mix in with the song
"No words, no talk, we'll go dreeeeeeeeaaming"
Ok guys, I have the best example here of what I'm talking about.
Listen to Agnelli & Nelson's "Everyday" on their "Hudson Street" CD (or pretty much any mix of the song), and then listen to the version they used for the music video.
As hot as the girl singing may be (and believe me, she is hot), the video version sucks craptacularly compared to the other versions. It is almost a sacrilege to cover such great music with singing like that!
MH
I prefer my trance without vocals, it just occured to me that i tend to like songs without vocals more than those with.
I think it depends on the complexity of the song...I totally agree with Swamper in that Silence would suck without Sarah singing her vocals...songs like Dutch Force - Deadline and Traveller - Bright Sign [Trance Mix] don't need vocals to make it a better song...if the melody can carry itself without vocals than all the better but i have to admit sometimes a song is better when you can sing along with it or well maybe for some people it wouldn't be better...guess it depends on the company you keep...I can't help it if people are tone deaf
...btw trance isn't exactly defined as a form of music that generally doesn't have vocals...trance is supposed to "alter your state of consciousness" be it through pure melody or with vocals...whatever works with you...that's why we have so much trance because each song affects everyone differently...well that all i think i will say before i start my whole treatise on the joys of trance...PLUR

I prefer songs without vocals in Techno or Hardhouse, But a lot of trance songs have got really cool vocals like Silence.
95% without. Tracks like Not Over Yet with Grace and some of Mea Culpa's are highly complimented by vocals. Other times any voices just screw up a good instrumental.
BIG UPS to vocals
in good hard trance you dont need them, but what about these tunes
chicane-saltwater
signum ft. scott mac-coming on stong
major league- wonder where you are(good without vocals too)
spoiled and zigo-more and more
grace-not over yet
BT-Dreaming
delerium-silence
jan johnston-freefall(skydive)
and others like that from Oakenfolds live sets back in the day. Usually from warm places only, like havana, australia, ibiza. Why does he change his style when he comes to North America???
Well like some others have said..so many songs would have gone no where without vocals.. I think there is a point where u have to draw the line though. Some songs are totally ruined with vocals. It all depends on the song and whether it's fitting or not. I'm listening to CHicane - saltwater right now and this song would be totally different w/out the vocals..
one of my favourite songs is heaven's earth and it's because of the vocals though. I've also heard remixes of rank 1 - airwave with vocals..and must i say I have never heard such garbage before..
So although they are important sometimes...they're not always necessary.
some song just need some vocals
some songs just need some vocals
how about Milk Inc. ?
(ok.. veryvery commercial music...)
without the vocals you would only have some silly tunes, the vocals make it complete
ADK
Yeah it does depend... but it only can be a nice female vocal... there so many songs that sound better with vocal parts...and some sound better with no vocals...but i do love the vocal trance...but its all good too me...but no guy vocals thats teh only thing i wouldnt like....
Where would MAuro Picotto's Iguana and Lizard be without lyrics ? However i do agree that often long verses ruin a perfectely good track, e.g. Higate - Pitchin'
