What kind of stupid question is that? Star Wars shits all over Lord Of The Rings!
considering that The Lord of the Rings is a BOOK and actually is in 6 "books" split between 3 volumes, I don't think it belongs in the same category of comparison with movie trilogies that were originally written for the screen (star wars, indiana jones, etc). This is important because while the book is one of the greatest stories of all time, the movies (other than Fellowship, which almost got it right) were AWFUL and completely failed to capture the important parts of the book, favoring the usual special effects bash instead of preserving the personalities of the characters intact from the book. Also, the book pisses all over everything else that's been mentioned in this thread.
The Godfather would win hands-down in the movie trilogy category if you were able to delete Part 3 and still call it a trilogy, and even then it's a close call because parts 1 and 2 are some of my favorite movies ever. In the end, I have to give it to Star Wars (and by that I mean the original trilogy, the new movies aren't Star Wars at all as far as I'm concerned and I flatly refuse to watch them ever again).

of all trilogies that blew me away, it's The Godfather (mainly P1 and P2) and LOTR....in different ways.
The Star Wars trilogy is great, IMO, but I think it's a bit overrated overall. If Eps 4-6 came out today with the script it has ad the effects of today....well, I don't it would get nearly the fanfare/warm reception that it got back then. It was amazing film technically for it's time and it's a really good premise, but the script itself sounds like it was written by me....cheesy as all hell and generic.
My two cents.

You are all stupid.
Best trilogy ever is of course non-other than George Romero's night of the living dead, dawn of the dead, and day of the dead. Even the re-makes of the original 2 rock. (ok, day of the dead isn't too great, just fairly great).
Props to ProggyMOJO for almost being not stupid tho.
the Bourne Trilogy is the best!
MARTIX trilogys. 2nd and 3rd should have been one film though.
just throwing this out for arguments sake, hasnt been mentioned yet

I mean, you have to be out your fucking mind to not see the clear difference.
Oh yeah, the Bourne trilogy. Some awesome movies. How James Bond should be. No special gadgets and kicks some serious ass!

not in Order
#1 Star Wars
#2 Indiana Jones
#3 The Bourne Series
#4 The Matrix
#5 Rocky
#6 Robocop
#7 Terminator
#8 LOTR
#9 Beverly Hills Cop
#10 The Godfather
#11 dinosaurs
#12 Die Hard
Id say Star Wars because there is so much more around the universe whereas in LOTR though the world is huge, there isnt as much that is left to the imagination. Star Wars has this massive set - well it is the universe haha - and the simple concept of the storyline lets you add more and more to it everytime. Speaking of which the game Force Unleashed...HOLY CRAP!
LOTR i would say are great books but not as epic as star wars universe.
