Carnell is Fire...coming may 2008!
ANDREA CARNELL
www.kult.com
Here she comes: "I'm a maneater, to be honest," says Andrea Carnell, the intense NYC dance diva. "I'm aggressive, and you can see that in my songs. My mindset is always that I'm going to get people to love me whether they like it or not."
For anyone who hears the alluring strength of Andrea Carnell's voice, loving her and the music she makes is inevitable. Unleashing confidence, energy and focused emotion straight into her recordings and fearless live shows, Carnell's distinctive style recombines her soul, gospel, disco, R&B, pop and electronica influences into a powerful vocal attack that eats men and women alive.
While her club singles and remixes for dance music heavyweight label KULT Records have been igniting international audiences en masse, don't call anything that she's doing typical. "Being different is cool that's always what grab's people's attention," Carnell notes. "When you go ballsy and brave, people like that, and I gravitate to songs that have a unique way of telling the story."
Carnell points to her recent hit tribal floor-shaker "Malfunction" as one example of defying expectations, the song's dramatic hooks setting the stage for her beautifully haunting vocals. In the tense "There's a Place", Carnell's sings with gentle force, precision and impressive range over spacious textures and pulsating beats, an intoxicating sonic cocktail that carves out its own space in the dance spectrum.
The hard-working Carnell is proud to point out that she didn't just sing "There's a Place" she also wrote and co-produced it, tough tasks that she is more than happy to take on. "With that song, my fascination with Donna Summer and Goldfrapp got combined in my head," explains Carnell. "It was a challenge to mix the breathy feel of a 'Love to Love You Baby' twisted together with the amazing sounds I was hearing from the last Goldfrapp CD. I love the result: It's funky, it's about love, and it's about sexuality.
"Producing is fun for me because it's putting together the sound," she continues. "I like sounds just as much as I like vocals and lyrics. If you know how to write and produce a song and you want to put a piano here or a horn there, then you go for it! Then you realize that this is fun: You can bring your own art to life."
Where it all really comes alive for Carnell is onstage, where her packed touring schedule has been keeping her very happy. "I almost like it too much," the diva says. "Doing dance music, I get swept away by the intense sounds around me. I believe you should express yourself performing, and the performers I admire are the ones who don't stand still onstage: Beyonce, Tina Turner, Janet Jackson. Even if Cher's not dancing, she's doing 15 costume changes! You can see why all these great acts are still around years later because you have to put on a SHOW. Look to the legends, that's where you get your inspiration."
A string of releases are due out on KULT Records, and Carnell and her new label have been drawing inspiration from each other. "KULT truly believes in me and my talent, and they like the Andrea Carnell image," she says. "It's glamorous, campy, fun to watch, and they've left me in complete control of it."
With the way she's coming on, however, Andrea Carnell might not be able to keep a lid on things much longer. "I want you want to want me, so you may as well let it happen," she states. "You have no choice: I'm coming in." David Weiss (Remix Mag)
