Massive power outage hits Florida

Massive power outages struck Florida on Tuesday afternoon, with power reported out from Miami to Jacksonville on the east coast and as far north as Tampa on the Gulf Coast, police and utility officials said.

About 4.4 million customers across South Florida were affected, Florida Power and Light Co. officials said.

The outage struck shortly after 1 p.m. ET as scattered thunderstorms passed through the region.

But the cause of the outage was not immediately known.

In Washington, officials at the Department of Homeland Security said there was no immediate concern that terrorism was behind the outage.

Stan Johnson, a spokesman for the North American Electric Reliability Council, said eight power plants were off-line across the region.

He said that officials believe the outage has been contained.

Detective Robert Williams, a Miami-Dade County police spokesman, said power was out across the entire county.

Outages stretched into neighboring Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, he said.

In Palm Beach County, spotty outages ranged from Riviera Beach to Boca Raton, said sheriff's spokeswoman Teri Barbera.

Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties are home to nearly 6 million people.

two nuclear power plants shut down at turkey point [about 30miles south of miami]. traffic was le suck, and the hospital was on generators for awhile, but most everything's back to normal.

Two of Florida's five nuclear reactors were shutdown as a result of the outage. Here is a statement from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission:

quote:
At approximately 1:09 p.m. today, Turkey Point's two nuclear reactors (units 3 and 4) automatically shut down from 100% power in response to an "undervoltage" caused when two power distribution lines between Miami and Daytona went down following an equipment malfunction in a substation near Miami. The automatic trip of the reactors is a safety measure to protect plant equipment from abnormal power line voltages. The reactors are likely to be shut down for 12 to 24 hours, as part of a regular re-start protocol, with offsite power sources remaining available. Emergency diesel generators were not necessary.

Worse part of it all it is this. The Winter music conference is next month so if power out still during that time some of use won't be able to have fun.

Exactly.

The nuclear reactions automatically shut themselves down because of a lack of power caused by an equipment malfunction. The safety protocols require this shutdown because without power, engineers cannot control reactor temperatures without external power.
