Subway ride darkens as teenagers turn ugly
February 27, 2008
Joe Fiorito

My friend Mary was coming from an early morning appointment; now, at 10 a.m., she was on her way to work, heading south on the Yonge line.

She was sitting on a long seat facing the aisle; there was a woman on her left and on her right, in a two-person seat, was a solitary man.

Mary said, "And then seven teenagers a mix of boys and girls got on at Bloor."

Here comes trouble.

"Two of the girls let's say they were 15 years old crawled over the man and sat down. One girl sat on the other girl's lap. They were laughing, tripping over the man, and I thought, `That's obnoxious; oh, well, they're young, they're just having a good time.'"

Mary went on reading her book.

Hang onto your hat.

"The girl who was sitting on top of her friend began yelling insults at everyone in the car, yelling in my ear, yelling that we didn't know anything about life. She was swearing. I don't recall the words but I thought, `She's got a bad mouth on her.'

"Maybe she was just having a bad day, a fight with her parents, or her boyfriend left her. She was angry and arrogant, too. She told us what a beautiful person she was."

Things got ugly then.

"She started yelling at the man. She called him a pedophile and a racist. He was reading the paper, I think. He hadn't been paying attention."

He paid attention fast.

"The yelling girl said, `I know you're coming to my house tonight to rape me.' The man raised his head and put his head back down again and she kept at him. Finally he said, `I'm not any of those things. I don't know why you're saying that.'"

The whole car, wondering the same thing.

Mary said, "I thought there probably wasn't anything any one of us could say to her, or she'd turn on us with an attack. I could feel the colour rising in my cheeks. The man was very mild but he'd obviously been stung.

"The woman beside me came to his defence. She said, `Why are you yelling at him? You don't know him.' The girl said to her, `You're a bitch.' I don't remember all the insults. At one point I said, `Maybe if we lowered our voices we'd all calm down.'"

The girl would not calm down.

"The tallest of the boys turned to the woman and told her to be quiet, there was nothing she could do, that she wasn't doing anything with her life.

"Finally, one of the boys I wish I could tell you which one and I've thought so much about this threw a first punch, and the punches passed over my head. I reached up and pressed the yellow emergency bar. I didn't see the man get hit."

The train stopped at the College station. The kids fled through the crowd. Mary said, "The man's glasses were broken. There was blood all over his face."

Mary had some water and someone else had paper towels. They cleaned the man's face as best they could. And the police and the paramedics came and they made sure he was okay, and the man went on his way. Mary said, "A couple of us talked afterwards. We didn't know if the kids had weapons."

She went to work; she walked. She is still angry, still upset; she still wonders if there was anything else she might have done. I think not. It happened much too fast and yes, those kids had a weapon.

Teenaged rage.

Joe Fiorito usually appears Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The parents need a good beating for raising up a bunch of hooligans

Posted by loca on Feb-28-2008 01:11:

Seen this happen a number of times before, minus the hitting. Some of those teens are taking emo a step too far Not to mention it's bloody annoying to hear some little **** complaining about her life and how it sucks wah wah wah. You're 15, you've got the latest fashion of footwear, D&G/Chanel/Versace/[insert name brand here] sunglasses, hat, sweater, jacket, etc. WTF is wrong with your life?!

IMO, parents just aren't setting as many rules as before and enforcing the ones they do have less than ever. My boss is the same way with her kids. I'm the one who ends up telling them they shouldn't talk to their mom like that, shouldn't hit her. When I'm over there I make rules for them and enforce them. And let me tell you I get a shit load more respect from them than she does.

Well, I don't believe beating your kids helps (except for last resort)
but now that I've grown up, I understand the need for discipline.

Respecting your parents (and elders in general) is a fundamental social behaviour for orderly society.

If some punk ass teen gave me lip and took a swing at me, I know that kid would have my foot on his or her neck. Thank goodness for self defence that allows you to teach punk teens a lesson

"beat your kids" sounds very bad imo
some slapping on a backside here there, that's what I got when I didn't behave well
I also remember getting slapped on a cheek a few times too when I reaaaaaally behaved badly

but wow, this article is something
I'd probably try to get off at the nearest stop and change cars

+1 on everything.

Beating you're kids helps because I have been raised in a way that whenever I did something wrong I was warned but if I did it again I got slapped, punished, ears pulled, belts, hangers, you name it I got it......That taught me that their are limits for everything....I was the craziest kid you could come across.....But then again I had very decent high school life and even lil before that nothing as compared to this article........

So everyone please beat your kids(harder if necessary)

Read the article, and other articles on the site if you have time. Maddox is unbelievably hilarious. I bought his best selling book "The Alphabet of Manliness"

Damn right those little bastards need to be beaten. Parent's are just WAYYY to absent and far too lenient these days.

BTW: Yes, Maddox is incredible.

This is one of the few times I have to disagree with you

I'm all about beating my kids. Not to abusive standards or anything but I got slapped on the face, got smacked with slippers, belts, the odd piece of racing track (all of those on the ass). I learned my lesson, and you better believe I learned to respect my parents, my elders, and the rules of polite society.

Still get shivers when I see this stuff... that hurt like a bitch lol

p.s. Last time i got open-palm face slapped by my mom i was 19! Although we both now agree I had been falsely accused of losing my school uniform sweater (which was in my cupboard).

lol oh believe me I got a fair share of beating too
I just think it should never escalate above certain level

my dad never ever touched me (but I think he did try to take a swing at me once or twice)... it was my mum who brutalized my ass LOL she threw a shoe at me once, and I had some explaining to do at school the next day, oops

I think for me it was 17 or 18
I was shamelessly late home one night and I got a ride on my friend's motorbike
needless to say my mom was PISSED
she smacked me so hard an earring flew out of my ear

+1...bunch of punk kids thinking they are all that

Posted by love_child on Feb-28-2008 03:53:

Yeah I got this one alot

And when my dad beat my ass with a belt I would try to jump high and forward at the same time to ease the impact but he would hold me hahaha...those were the days

Joe Fiorito needs to take a couple more English writing courses in college. His grammar's shit.

Posted by StereoPrincess on Feb-28-2008 04:20:

i wonder what they were on.

it just sickens me.

and i bet they were all the size of adults so anyone that says they would have taken on these kids is dead wrong. they would kick your ass in a second and not give a shit about it since they are protected under young offenders act.

i didn't get beaten and i am an upstanding individual. edit: lol.
