All Psytrance lovers out there need help!

ok just wanna know if theres any specific sub genres for Psytrance...

why i ask this is because i want to classify tracks for convenience to our clients. (i work for a record store)

if theres is none Psytrance sub genres, is it good if i just put them all under Psy. or should i sub categories this like House, Trance and other EDM..

and what about goa???

appreciate your help peoples

psy is one of the most open and diverse genres there are. The sub genres go countless. And genres present faults anyway. I bet people come up with a bunch of them, but to me, basically there are 3 main sounds in psytance

1 full on
2 progressive
3 goa

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychedelic_trance

Wikipedia says:

-Dark
-Melodic
-Progressive

Take from that what you will.

1 full on: astrix for example, all hommega records should be put under here...

2 progressive such as anything from for example Iboga records

3 goa... this is old skool, stuff like astral projection for example

thats pretty much how i categorized them same with josh

i hade no idea but this summer i was at ozora in hunagry and there was full on, progressive, and even funky (funky psy..lol- chuckle)- it all sounded the same to me...

however, the super dark evil shit, that sounds and feels viral, and only makes sense on 6 hits of acid, i do not know how to label... ;-)

It depends entirely on how big your inventory of records is. If you work for a small shop where Psy is just one of many genres that shoppers can choose from, then you're best off having a psy section, as anyone who likes psy should be able to browse through and find what they're looking for. Conversely, if you work for a large shop, then its a good idea to create subsections within Psy. If you're going to go that route then you should logically create Full-On and Prog subsections and incorporate anything that you think is Goa into the full on section. This way you're essentially telling customers to conveniently choose between the faster (Full-on or Goa) or slower (Prog) subgenres.

basically i have a vary large directory of Psy, from different countries and many many diffrent styles.

ive encountered Full on, Prog and Goa

thanks Mecca and Josh, i knew you guys will come up with a good help.

but heres the thing, ive encountered, smoothed out, kinda like melodic progressive in a way, then theres also Tech, which is kinda like tech trance in a way.

then theres rock!!! kinda like Infected M. and some other catz.

so what ive been doin latey is sub categorizing each track to the best thing that i can describe it.

maybe ill stick to the main 3. Full on, for harder stuffs, prog and goa.

thanks again for all the help.

where's your record store at??? are u talking vinyls??? or u got cds too?

Just break it up into four simple categories. All psy forums and psy groups break it down this way. Dig around if you don't believe me. Each of the four categories has it's own sub category but you don't want to get that deep.

1. Full on
2. Darkpsy (it has become a genre all it's own)
3. Progpsy
3. Isra trance (the cheesy Skazi, IM, Yahel stuff)

Make it easy on yourself and just classify it as psy trance

the lines are getting more blurred anyway.
