Evil1 Rogers & Sympatico Users Should read this

For those of you using Rogers or Sympatico for High Speed internet I'm sure you've already heard that both companies plan to impliment Data / Bit Caps on your service this summer, charging you extra if you exceed your download/upload limits.
Here's the link for the article in the Toronto Star

http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/Co...d=1020809092772

Personaly I think this is ridiculous, the whole point of high speed service is to enjoy rich media content, and to download/upload at faster speeds.

Anyways, there's a petition being signed by users who oppose this action, I suggest those of you who also disagree with this change of service sign the petition, the more people who sign it the better.

man.... this is 100% bs... i JUST got sympatico 2 weeks ago.. haha.. oh wells..

so, will limiting the bandwidth "hogs" speed everyone's connection up? or is bell just being greedy?

Posted by bluE_Neon on May-09-2002 01:21:

this is total bullshit if they have problems with the bandwith at rogers, why wont they do anything? and supposely they monitor the upload/download, ya watever..looks like im gonna have to change for Sympatico Ultra in summer time...

Posted by BANDIT on May-09-2002 01:24:

Yeah I agree this is totally Pure BullShit
40 bucks plus TAX for sympatico and still have a limit, dam bastards
@ least they should have a discount for students!!!

Posted by Time2Burn on May-09-2002 02:17:

It pisses me off that multi million dollar companies can get away with shit like that.

It is NOT about freeing up bandwidth for all users. That is a load of crap that they want to shovel into people's mouths. It is about MONEY, they obviously feel that people will buy their more expensive "ultra" packages.

They can talk out of their asses about how they care about customer satisfaction and shit like that. All they are is greed mongering pricks and if I can help it my service will be moved.

Posted by BANDIT on May-09-2002 02:48:

I don't think we can do anything about it guys
we might get a chance to say our opinion but they won't listen to us
its all about the $$$ MONEY $$$

dirty peices of shit!! ILL SHOW THEM!!

I felt left out.

Posted by Bizz on May-09-2002 04:04:

I put my 2 cents in the petition already, but I don't think it will do anything. Rogers and Sympatico will just wind up losing a lot of customers.. personally, I'll just be searching for a better connection and ISP after they do their price hike

Posted by DamnDirtyApe on May-09-2002 05:31:

What other high speed internet access is there? Do we have any choicec?

Anyway, it could be worse - the university residence I'll be moving back into this September has a 524MB/week limit!

Hahhaa, not only will they lose lot of customers (including me) but other companies might step up and offer comparable plans but without any limits on bandwidth... now that's what I'd love to see, some competition.

And yes, it has always been about the $$ money $$ and it will always be about that... we can't do shit about it.

Exclamation

WEll, yeah it does suck indeed.bad But what can we do about it? Nothing. There is ONLY Rogers and Sympatico. Any other place such as some that I have seen in Missisauga will charge u 29.99 for the dls ONLY modem rentals and crap are EXTRA and they cap u worse than Sympatico and rogers do altogether. Simply put, we have no choice unless someone here can afford a business line From AT&T.

On the other hand, the sympatico package does not sound that bad (Considering we HAVE NO CHOICE!). They offer us in the Ultra package from Sympatico (in plain English) 375 K Download and 80 Upload (according to my calculations). Which for 85 bucks (incl.tax) does not sound that bad to me. The only thing I got a problem with is the fact I can only have a total traffic 10 gigs a month. If they raised that a bit I would have no prob with it. But then again, not everyone can afford 85 dollars a month. So it is unfair to the consumer who's income is limited to such expenses. All in all I see a lot of pros and cons. But I really have no prob with the service right now. I just wished that it would stay that way..

Posted by Don on May-09-2002 20:45:

this for sure will increase the amount of competition in high speed internet suppliers...it also should hopefully increase the amount of alternatives out there...apparently Nortel is working on internet through the electrical outlet...thats going to be nuts..

Posted by harcourt on May-09-2002 20:52:

Your bitching will get you no where, you only have 1 choice in cable, and in the DSL side, I can almost guarantee whatever Sympatico does, the others who buy it off Sympatico will follow suit. So you're S.O.L. if you don't want to pay for more. We had it cheap for a long time, the states on average is $49.95/month and has been for some time, the UK doesn't even have high speed (on average) over 500kbps, that too is more money than ours. It sucks yes, can you do anything about it? Absolutely not (if you can accept dial-up, then so be it. I could never go back, I'm a broadband snob!)

IM SERIOUSLY GONNA SNAP!!

Not only Rogers Tech service is shity-- which ticked me off a few times, but still sane..

FUCK THAT!!!

THATS IT!! IM FUCKING GOING DOWNTOWN TO ROGERS HQ AND BURN THE FUCKING BUILDING DOWN!!!

Would you think, with all these ppl they get to subscribe-they would ATLEAST start upgrading there systems/servers/nodes/shubs... whatever to compensate for this... NOOoo!!!

DAMN IT!! THERE SHOULD BE A PROTECTION PLAN FOR US.. NO?!

ONE PISSED OFF MOFU,
ramie

Hey bro, drop me a line when you head down there, I'll bring the matches, so we can burn the mofos down!

Posted by Jayci on May-09-2002 22:47:

yeah this is so retarded! when i'm living on res during school term, I have my downloading limit capped, and i'm always looking forward to when i get to go home and download like mad, and now this? i might as well just keep using my sadass university connection. they all do this, give you an awesome offer, then increase prices one at a time. its just like that long distance phone thing, it was too good to be true. $20 cap on unlimited ld. a few months later, they start charging you

Posted by Swamper on May-10-2002 01:58:

I think I'm going to open a bandwidth cafe.

Posted by torontotrance on May-10-2002 02:08:

Smile

It's greed damnit......at it's finest.......good pt.....we won't be able to contest it......that sucks.

Posted by Sarcoman on May-10-2002 04:05:

I used to pay $0.50 per hour for dialup. The only reason I choose Rogers and then Sypatico was because it was highspeed. I felt that paying $45 a month was already quite expensive. Im not the type of internet user to just view websites, rather, I signed in for highspeed because they allowed me to view and download media content. Now im being charged more to do the one thing I signed up to do. I can understand a modest price increase, like 5% annually because of increasing costs, but to all of a sudden increase to $70 is outrageous. My only hope is that a cheap, unlimited alternative comes around (freenet cable would be awesome,... but im only dreaming)

Posted by malek on May-11-2002 06:15:

I just talked to my friend who works as tech support for sympatico here in Montreal and this thing with limits is real and coming very soon

this is more than outrageous, its outright theft. I have High speed Sympatico for 3 years now. When I got the service, they told me that I have to rent the damn modem cause they would change it very soon and it would be a waste to buy it. Now 360$ later I'm still stuck with the same modem and these bastards don't let me buy the damn thing! And now they want to limit my surfing pleasure! I mean come on, god damn it, what the hell is the purpose of rich media content if it has poor bandwidth! Its like having a Porshe with 5 litres of gaz!!

I found another ISP http://www.istop.com who has a decent limit and good prices if you buy the modem... anyone knows about it??

KarateKid ?!?!?!

everyone should really check out the RBUA website. It's the association of Broadband Users .. so basically that means everyone using Rogers OR Sympatico. If there's gonna be a battle between us all and Rogers + Bell.. the RBUA would be the last line of defense.

www.RBUA.org

(mixes molotov cocktails)

and for more info on the legal fight against this.. check out this thread:

ohz and here's some GOOD stuff about the whole Sprint Highspeed Internet:
(kinda old but nonetheless useful)

Well right now the speeds for cable are pretty good. Downstream 200kb/sec (1.5mbit) and upstream is about 45kb/sec. How come they cap the upstream so much?

Posted by Michael Russo on May-12-2002 03:50:

I really don't care about the caps... but 1 gig of downloads on the basic plan and 10 gigs on the most expensive plan? That's ridiculous, I can download 10 gigs in one day. I'd rather use dialup and get to download as much as I want than have cable and have to watch what I download.

I really hope sprint comes out with something, and other companies pop up... we need competition because with a little bit, rogers and bell will get crushed.
