There is a chat function, as well as voice / video chat. It's an eBay company... it's not going away any time soon.

Btw, the videochat-capable Linux client has finally been released recently
I'm using this program only for talking to people unable to use SIP-clients, since it's great at circumventing firewalls ... nevertheless it's the first serious VoIP app for the masses.
