If you skip TV commercials, you're a THIEF
The argument goes something like this:
1. Network TV is supported by ads.
2. Companies pay for ad spots on the assumption that people will watch them.
3. If people don't watch the ads, they're effectively getting the programming without "supporting" the ads that make the programming possible.
4. Therefore people who don't watch the ads on network TV are THIEVES.
When Jamie Kellner was chairman of TBS in 2002, he gave an argument to this effect:

| JK: I'm a big believer we have to make television more convenient or we will drive the penetration of PVRs and things like that, which I'm not sure is good for the cable industry or the broadcast industry or the networks. CW: Why not? JK: Because of the ad skips.... It's theft. Your contract with the network when you get the show is you're going to watch the spots. Otherwise you couldn't get the show on an ad-supported basis. Any time you skip a commercial or watch the button you're actually stealing the programming. CW: What if you have to go to the bathroom or get up to get a Coke? JK: I guess there's a certain amount of tolerance for going to the bathroom. But if you formalize it and you create a device that skips certain second increments, you've got that only for one reason, unless you go to the bathroom for 30 seconds. They've done that just to make it easy for someone to skip a commercial. |
Oh ok, i will watch them from now on then.
thank god for tivo
They call me Danny Ocean.
Your right. Probably not stealing if you buy the box sets though... the cable/whatever companies would probably get a share from them due to getting the product out.

ehh holy shit thats a load of bull
basically, the way the model works is that networks sell audiences to advertisers
so the whole skipping ads does break the system a bit, but it no way makes consumers thieves. in fact, by that model, it would make more sense that it'd be the network's fault if audiences aren't attentive to ads, seeing as they're the ones selling them
where's the contract between viewer and station for watching ads?
what a crock.
some superbowl ads are entertaining. if all commercials attempted to reach this quality of humor and entertainment i'd watch them.

If it's stealing, why the fuck do I pay 80 dollars a month for Cable?

commercials are so fucking annoying. it kills the experience of watching anything..especially a movie. like i need 10 piss breaks in the span of 2 hours
I like the sytem they have in europe a lot better; one or two longer-lasting commercials per movie and you get less interruptions.

Apparently, you need a special license to do that.. didn't know about it before - but it sounds like a good thing
the fact that they would actually say this makes me want to watch commercials even less...
I just can't stand how the commercials are 30% louder then the show and i always have to turn down my Tv
Hmm. Not looking at every banner ad on every website is stealing its content, as is using a text-based browser or browsing with images off.
Not focusing entirely on a commercial means you are stealing the station's programming. (NO DAYDREAM FOR YOU!)
"Channel Surfing" is ILLEGAL!
Pop-up blockers are ILLEGAL!
I guess each station needs to come up with an acceptable commercial-to-sitcom ratio like the old FTP upload/download ratio setup. (e.g. - you watch 30 seconds of commercial and it gives you 2 minutes of programming... else your TV shuts off.)
