my kid used to have ideas of their own.... until they took OBAY

so ive been seeing these all over town and to be honest, they are driving me up the wall.... thoughts?

Since fake pharmaceutical ads for a drug called "Obay" starting appearing across Ontario (and elsewhere) last week, everyone from street artist Frank Shepard Fairey (aka OBEY) to Scientologists to comedian Maggie Cassella has been fingered as the culprit behind them.

Last Friday, three days after the ads seem to have launched, we traced them, with no small amount of confidence, to a substantially less dramatic sourceColleges Ontario, an advocacy organization representing twenty-four colleges across the province. The organization would neither confirm nor deny their involvement to either Torontoist or, several days later, The Star, but still told us all to wait a few weeks for...something. As far as mysterious ad campaigns go, this one was almost perfect: only breadcrumbs to trace back to the source, a city left to talk about the ad and its message and what it all meant (which, of course, was precisely the point).

But it's finally official: Rob Savage, Colleges Ontario's Director of Communications, called Torontoist moments ago to confirm that Colleges Ontario is indeed behind the ads, and the organization just sent out a press release with information about a media launch event next Monday at (fittingly) Centennial College that promises to reveal "the news behind Obay and its side effects on Ontarios Post-secondary Education." Torontoist will be there.

I honestly thought it had been up here before, but apparently not, hence my post.

Totally disappointing if it's related to colleges ontario.

Posted by Cosmic Fur on Mar-06-2008 14:07:

It IS related to ontariocolleges.ca. They started the second phase of their campaign this past Monday I think, with a new line of posters saying "Thankfully Obay isn't real"

Edit: here

So no more mystery, which is why I was saying it was late to jump on the discussion wagon now.

I'm guessing something about how many parents (esp immigrant parents) pressure their kids to pick major and uni/college that their kids may not necessarily want.

I can see how this might be necessary. I know my parents wanted me to take urban planning at ryerson, and I said firm no and took history which I wanted to.

Naturally, parents want what is best for their kids. But a lot of them don't realize that their kids' lives aren't theirs to live.
Parents should encourage, and give good advice, but never force their kids to do something once their kids are mature enough to make, and accept the consequences of their decisions

Finally! First time I saw one of those I was in the bus. I kinda glanced at it, and then looked again because I was sure there was NO WAY I had seen what I thought I had seen. Sure enough, something about OBAY. It's been driving me insane as to what the purpose was... lol

What's more, the chances of a child succeeding in a field of study (especially a likely difficult one like engineering, medecin, etc) which was forced upon him/her is very low. I can understand why a parent would want to try to force their child into a field of study that would lead to work in a more lucrative industry, but it's very misguided. In my opinion, for the average person, those fields of study are near impossible to excel in unless you take a personal interest in it.

yea and then u have people going in for an arts degree in photography or something cos "thats what they looooove" and then finding themselves stuck without a job in that "field" cos u dont really need a degree to be a professional photographer

totally agree...

I don't think parents should force their kids into something as long as they are not choosing to go to school for something that there is about 1% chance they will get a job in once they graduate...

My mom wanted me to be a dentist --- i am an electrical engineer since that is what I wanted...she didn't have a problem with it.

I think guidance is very important.

In Canada we encourage children to make adult decisions and encourage adults to be dictated to like children. What a strange country this is becoming!

I think that anyone is capable of succeeding at a more challenging degree, it will just take a lot more work and effort for some.

The worst thing is when I hear people say..."eww math, or eww science"...its cause they have this strange mindset that its horribly horribly challenging...well it isnt..it just takes time and practice.

I'm not sure if I'm in agreement with this statement Graham.

I doubt there are any stats to prove it since at the current moment laws prevent the gathering of information on student's academic success in universities based on their cultural, spiritual, or ethnicity. I think someone recently proposed that though, but I'm not sure if it passed or not. I"m sure if you really wanted to though, you could probably put together info. from various sources to come up with some pretty solid stats.

Most kids I've known/know (usually immigrants) who face extreme pressure from their parents to pursue the more difficult professions such as; Medicine, Engineering, Law, etc.. may not be thrilled about pursuing these professions, but they not only tend to excel in those fields for the most part, but lead the pack overall especially here in Toronto's 3 major universities.

Logically, what you're saying makes sense to me though. I need to be interested in something, especially if it's something that I'll be dedicating 4+yrs to complete and then work in. But we need to remember, that different cultures approach these things differently. The 'my interest first' that we are spoiled here in the Western world with, isn't shared by most of the world. Meaning, they will think about the well being of their 'family', knowing that their parents came to Canada to give them a better future, and they almost feel obliged to succeed and become the person their parents dream of...even if it means they have to go to school and graduate in a field that they're not happy with or would've chosen for themselves.
