Tax Return Time!

So It's that time of year again!

Do you do your own taxes or get someone to do it for you? Are you happy with what your getting back this year? (If at all getting anything back...)

I just did my income tax. 30mins using an online application.

Course, I'm a poor uni student so it's easy for me

I guess I should answer my own question haha...

I decided to do my own taxes this year. I usually go to H&R Block but this year I decided use Ufile and file with Netfile. It was very easy to use and if you are a student (or were a student for more than a month in 2007) it is free to file your taxes, that's right FREE.

Anyways, I checked today and they already assessed my taxes and I'll be getting a refund of $2,313.93

I use my family accountant.

This year I will get back all of a $100. I had no income, but will get something back for my metro pass rebates.

Ufile, 3075$ returns

My dad does it. He said that I have to learn eventually, and every year seems to be the year he's going to teach me....but then he never does. I have no complaints!

should be a hefty check! all those university credits!

I netfile every year and have filed my own taxes for the last 15 years, lol. My situation remains pretty straightforward and it would be relatively pointless to pay someone to file on my behalf.

Netfile FTW. return is direct deposited in 2 weeks or less, no charge.

For you students (who also work), you can ask you employer to deduct less income tax from your pay, since you know that your tuition results in a refund every year. That way, you're not lending the gov't your money interest-free during the year and it's in your pocket right away. However, if you're not so great at budgeting (I'm pretty bad, lol), it's nice to get a lump sum refund at tax time

Same here until I moved out . Now it's Carlos' family's accountant that does it. I wouldn't even know where to start if I tried to do it myself.

Like Mark, I'm just an employee, so relatively easy return, will be filing it tonight or tomorrow probably.

Yes Ozzy I'm happy:

1) It hadn't occurred to me until recently that I'd be receiving a return soon and, so, it was a nice 'surprise'.
2) My return (when it eventually arrives) should cover in their entirety the expenses I will incur next weekend when I finally pick up my snowboarding gear.

hahahaha that's what my dad did with me... until he kinda just stopped doing it and I was forced to go to H&R lol

Apparently it's really easy to do yourself too....as you actually had mentioned. A good friend of mine works at PWC and it's his first year going through training/tests to become a chartered accountant. Thank goodness he's doing that, b/c once my dad stops doing them I think I'll probably just get my friend to do them for me.

Except that I can pretty much do it myself...but he likes doing it.

I will be getting a little bit back this year. Have a bit of tuition and RRSP contribution to write off!

Probably around $2,000 or something like that

About $90 to my accountant, with a pile of unsorted receipts and forms I don't care to go through and waste time myself, and I'm done. Worth every penny for me.

Your classifications are really wrong.

Question: How long does it take to get your return if you file it yourself?

technically, the less you get in return in your taxes the better....

It depends if you have Direct Deposit setup.

Someone at my office file their taxes at the beginning of the week and it says that they are going to get their money by Monday...

my roomy got $5k last year
i'm expecting $2K for sure, and anything else on top

with a simple file and direct deposit, it usualy takes 3 to 10 office days.
