How often/How many tracks to buy?
Well I have acquired an interest to start spinning Techno.
Now here is my dilemma, and it might sound odd...
Seeing as I have 0 techno tracks, I really feel like I don't know where/how to start..lol
Obviously go to beatport and listen and download what I like...However, is there maybe a "library of classics" or tracks that most people have or anything of that sort (probably not..lol)
Also, how many tracks do you think is good to buy in the begining to have a good variety?
and
How many tracks do you guys buy per week?
I have no real philosophy as I'm sure most people don't. Browse around whenever you want, buy at whim. I guess my process could be systematized but I think that'd make it more of a chore.
As for techno, what branch of techno: Detroit, hard, minimal?

Buying tracks is kindof a weekly ritual for me. Come home from work on Friday, smoke a brwl, and preview tracks for the next 2 hours or so. Usually end up with anywhere from 5 to 20 tracks.

I have to limit myself to about 5 or 6 tunes a week cos otherwise I'd buy loads, spend loads of money, then never play half of it!
i just buy whatever i like whenever i feel like buying. main problem for me is that i usually don't have enough time to look for new tracks. hopefully that'll change when i graduate.
Here are some lists for you to try:
go to Beatport
go to Techno genre
on right side of page is Top Downloads
- Under top downloads are the 100 most downloaded currently and the top 100 classics
I get most of my mp3 from beatport...but i use other sites too so i do not have the same tracks as the other beatport freaks. i usually listen to about 20 tracks before I find one that is 'good'. usualy takes me about 2 hours to find about 10 tracks i like. and i always start with the new releases and look over the last 2-3 weeks.
i order my vinyl from juno records.
good luck!

that should get you 'started'
the awesome thing with minimal/techno and more conceptual, experimental and abstract music is that there are so many uncovered artists. there is a lot of stuff out there. lots of great netlabels that supply free releases. a handful of labels even release loop packs that you can use in your own sets if you wish. dig around and don't rely only on beatport.
as for how many tracks i buy. i don't buy weekly...i build up a crate of tracks for about a month or so then go over it and discard of tunes i don't like as time progressed. eventually i'll buy after all that. lately i've been taking a lot of time to find free netlabel releases.
good info thanks
