Super Smash Brothers Brawl

It's here. Finally.

Go out and get it. PLAY YOUR ASSES OFF.

I've got a JPN copy but haven't had the chance to play it yet... Gonna take part in the Brawl Gamestop Tournament tonight (since they're doing a midnight launch).

Any commentary?

Oh and... Final roster:

Posted by RJT on Mar-08-2008 17:18:

I could never get into the other Smash Brothers games because I always had friends who put waaaaay too much time into figuring exactly how each exploit worked and were absolutely no fun to play - it wasn't even fun to watch them play each other, it was basically who could win the cheapest way the most quickly.

Early reviews say there are at least initially less of these - which would make me happy. I'm probably going to pick this up on Tuesday once it's available shearly because of the amount of praise I've seen levied upon it.

We've found plenty of glitches already.

Nothing nearly as useful as wavedashing but... some really neat stuff.

Welp, then it looks like I'll be leaving this one to everyone else then. I don't have time for fighting games with absolutely no balance.

That's a shame. This percentage of players that actually know how to use advanced techniques is fairly low compared to the remainder. You should get the game and play online.

Also, it's basically been proven time and time again that about 90% (not over exaggerating) of fighting games out there are unbalanced in one way or another. So it's kinda hard to find those diamonds in the rough.

Plus, Brawl is more of a party game (less about fighting). Give it a chance. I have plenty of friends who are quite average (or even below) at Melee but they still play with me and the others who are a bit more advanced. They get by just fine without using glitches (but not really - an air dodge into the ground is considered cheating? lol) and even sometimes win.

I guess it's just going to university and having to deal with the number of people who play the first party Nintendo games nonstop as opposed to going to class who really bother me - and unfortunately the majority of people I play games with seem to find far more time to play than I do, inevitably making it a wash for me.

I will probably still pick it up and play on my own just to see what the hype is all about (I'll readily admit to buying games that seem to get universal praise just to see what the fuss is about).

As far as balance in fighting games - sure there are loads of games out there that are horribly balance, the Soul Caliber series, Tekken, etc., but few have ever reached the level that Melee seemed to.

Street Fighter 2 - now there's a balance fighting game

I've loved every Smash game, such a good time when playing with buds. Can't wait to check this one out.

Got some time in with the American version over the course of the last day - it really does seem to be as good as they say it is.

In other news, apparently the local GameStop doesn't plan on having any on Tuesday - the vast majority of the first shipment that wasn't supposed to street until then seems to have made it's way out of the store already.

Picked up my copy yesterday and started playing around.

I have a huge issue with the fact that every character from Melee has a nearly identical move-set from their melee appearance. But they DID edit HOW some of those moves deal damage (Pikachu's back-air is a combo now instead of a single-hit, which makes it a much more useful attack), so it wasn't a complete lack of effort there.

I appreciate the L-canceling (for attacks, it still works when you're hit) and Wave-Dashing being removed. I also really like how they slowed the game-speed down a touch, it's not quite as slow as the 64 version, but it IS slower than Melee, a nice balance I think.

I'm really liking Snake, Olimar, Diddy Kong, Ike and Lucas from the new characters... Pokemon Trainer is fun too. Marth, Falco, Fox and Sheik are still pure pwns though. Not much done there to balance out ALL the characters, we're still going to be seeing the same 8 useful characters followed by 'everyone else'.

Ike and King Dedede are both entirely useless, Link is even slower than he has been... The next Smash Bros (assuming there is one) really needs to have the effort put in to make 'power' characters useful.

Some of the new levels are awesome, the first two levels of Super Mario Bros are Brawl Maps? YES!

Gonna give it more than a night to make my final verdict, but so far I'm enjoying Brawl much better initially than when I played Melee for the first time.

My roommate bought it and we spent the majority of today going through The Subspace Emissary thing. Probably one of the worst gaming experiences I've ever had.

The game play is great and really lives up to the old games, but this campaign mode is just arduous and drawn out. Good game besides that though.

Just got back from spending a good hour on this. Loved every minute of it, however I will say that I felt the game was too much like an expansion pack of sorts to Smash Bros. Melee.

Don't get me wrong, its probably a good thing that Nintendo didnt change too much for fear of damaging the core of what makes this game so great in the first place...but everything seems all too familiar. Then again, thats a good thing considering I love the other two Smashes anyway.

All in all, I think its a great time, and a blast with 4 peeps.

Bite your tongue, feller.

King DeDeDe is considered near top-tier in this game, if you use him properly. His fully charged Dsmash can kill a person at 3X%.

Someone talk more about Subspace Emissary - I'm seeing very, very mixed reviews (seems to be a love/hate type of thing).

I really shouldn't be spending any money this week as I leave for Amsterdam in 5 days, but after the first go round with it I'm feel a bit of withdrawal.

Fixed.

Still haven't played my JPN copy so... will let you know my opinion of Subspace Emissary during my spring break next week.

Posted by Mr Game+Watch on Mar-10-2008 19:15:

The game is everything I hoped it would be, and more...

Currently working through the Subspace Emissary with my brother, co-op... I think the biggest problem with the SSE is the constant character switchups... and the stages aren't really built to take advantage of specific characters. It feels much more fleshed out than the Adventure Mode in Melee, though, and has its share of secrets.

Now, to find some decent competition in central Long Island... I really miss the college days when I knew literally 40 people who would meet every week just to compete at SSB64 and Melee.

I've been seeing those opinions too actually, but I'll be very surprised if that opinion sticks once the game's been out for a while and each character's metagame is fully explored. In the past speed has trumped power every single time in Smash Bros, and I don't expect it to be any different. They have powerful attacks, but they take too long to pull off, and leave the characters open to attack if they miss. Faster characters will be able to attack before attacks can be pulled off, or after they miss (and faster characters mean harder to hit), for that matter.

Posted by enydo on Mar-11-2008 20:49:

Subspace Emissary is just really long and tedious. I was really aggravated with the last level. It was enjoyable for the first couple hours, but then we just started wanting it to end, and it doesn't.

Outside of that I love the game, I just could have done without that specific mode.

Well if I can actually find a copy to buy I'm going to get one tonight.

Although I feel like that's a completely absurd expectation.

wierd, every store up here had atleast around 5-10 copies still in store, only few locations actually sold out.

Posted by RJT on Mar-12-2008 04:09:

Yeah, i thought it would be a lot harder than it actually was - Best Buy, Wal Mart, and Target were all sold out but GameStop had about 70 copies.

Posted by RJT on Mar-12-2008 05:14:

Also, two things:

1. I've realized quite quickly that I have no idea what the fuck is going on in this game. The fact that I am capable of winning in that state adds to the confusion.

2. I have no idea where to get my "Friend Code."

I hear only the backup works of this one on modded Wii's. Confirm?
