Anti-Virus / Security Software

Guys,

My mate is looking to upgrade the anti-virus/security programs on his PC, any recommendations?

Thank you please

AVG Free edition. Look no further.

Make sure its the Free Edition tho, the Pro version charges. Only difference between the two AFAIK is that the Pro version gets updates a few days before the free.

Great program, effective and doesnt use a ton of memory.

Plus, if you have an authenticated version of Windows XP, get Defender (I believe it's at the Beta 2 version right now). Decent firewall imo. Combine it with AVG and you've got the 1-2 punch.

AVG is about as useful as one legged man in an arse kicking competition.

Get NOD32.

Norton Antivirus 2008 literally cleaned my laptop and got rid of one of the most annoying viruses on my laptop......You get 15 days trial version on www.download.com and you can buy it 30-40 bucks I think.....Not a bad deal.

yep. NOD32 is really really good, then kaspersky imo.

however these are not free, the best free one you can get is Avast.

and yes, get Windows Defender, its free if you have a legit copy of XP. good for spyware and other malware.

Norton slows the machine way down, and it just isn't as good as the others mentioned already.

I agree it slows the machine down but I had this very annoying virus that had changed my background on my laptop to this biohazard sign and kept poping up these stupid pop ups saying buy this anti virus to get rid of all the viruses on my laptop.....Norton got rid of it in the very first scan......

being able to use your laptop on slow speed > not being able to do anything at all.

Fixed.

Don't you agree?

Posted by leph555 on Mar-10-2008 13:18:

norton is a waste of money, there isn't anything good in it at all

They are if you steal them.

This is the most moronic reasoning I've ever heard in my life.

hehe, sounds like u had and probably still might have the Zlob trojan. Its embedded as a fake codec to play some sort of video..usually a porn. It does exactly what u are describing. It also hijacks your browser such as firefox when u do a google search, it directs u to a search page that looks like google, except its all links to download more spyware and fake anti-virus programs. Hitting enter again will pull up your real google search page. Its a nasty one to get rid of completely.

I cant remmeber what its called but it is kinda similar to what you have explained but never played any videos or anything just had a background set up as computer under urgent need of attention and had pop ups poping every 5 minutes was a bad one I tried different programs before I gave Norton 2008 a chance....

I personally like avast over AVG for anti-virus. AVG was missing alot of hits when i was doing my own experiment. Avast also does web monitoring.

Posted by Fibonacci on Mar-10-2008 16:45:

maybe you should uninstall limewire and/or stop downloading porn from there.
