Real or fake?
I think it's a sham.

It's real I have one in my bookshelf.

Posted by Mmanu on Mar-17-2008 21:47:

Of course it's real. Especially that part when Moses takes a 40 year stroll in the desert, all his buds begging him to stop and throw a sand castle contest.

Gotta love the episode when his 140 year old wife Sarah gets pregnant. There's another 1200+ pages likewise. I'll spare you with the O RLY owl.

its called artistic freedom ffs

but yeah.. might be based on real things that happened inside someones head..

i think its a moral code that just doesn't work in today's society.

i also think that the higher ups in religion saw it as a way to control people and changed the texts as they saw fit.
(control = taking basic human instincts, telling people those instincts are wrong, and giving them a way to satisfy those instincts that jives with the founder's ideas)

Absolutely

The idea that the creator of the universe would reveal himself and his purpose to us puny humans has compelled billions of people throughout history to obey his supposed "special revelation". Whether anyone believes or not is left up to faith...

You need to be a little more educated... the anchient Hebrew calander had a 40 day year (based on the flood). 140 x 40 = 5600 days old / 365 = 15.342 years old.

My personal position has long since been that the bible is a very strange combination of historical fact, fable, philosophy, law, and falsehoods worked in to support the power of the day. It is a very difficult anthology of books to reason out as it was written over hundreds of years buy many authors with differing agendas. Rather then looking at specifics one must look more toward themes if one is to gain anything of use from it.

the bible -> bigest lie in history.

The Hebrews had a lunisolar calendar. Like other lunisolar calendars, it had 354 days in a year, with extra months inserted in certain years to coordinate the moon and sun.

Additionally, the story of Sarah (who was actually the wife of Abraham, not Moses) makes zero sense if you say that she was fifteen years old when she got pregnant, since the pregnancy was supposed to be "miraculous" because of her old age (which was 90, not 140).

Different are calanders used throughout the bible (the earliest being based on the flood); however, I conceed that Sarah's pregnancy was considered to be a miracle based on old age. Perhaps a more salient point when discussing this particular story and Sarah's age would be that the story was told verbally for many generations prior to being recorded in written form. Verbal story telling has a high propencity for exageration.

anyone that discredits the historical aspect of the bible is an idiot, the bible is full of real places and real people, many which are supported in outside texts. Furthermore the bible talked about people and places that were only later discovered, i.e. Pontius Pilate was thought to be made up only till we discovered coins with his name and imprint. Were people CAN say that the bible is BS is in its "Religious" side, miracles and such....

Real People ? do you have DNA evidence to support this ? or are you presuming there are real because someone wrote it in a book. Its like end of the world and everyone dies and in year 7000 someone discovers a old text called ' Lord of the Rings ' are they gonna think its real or false ?.

What he's saying is that many of the people and events in the bible can and have been proven somewhat accurate based on other evidence from non-biblical sources. The fact that there are Roman coins with Pontius Pilate's name and image on them as well as records from Roman sources that reference him is relatively good evidence to coroborate his existance (which was once questioned by many). There are many other instances where non-biblical sources and archeological finds coroborate various biblical stories as being at least based in fact. This is why he's stating that the bible is a good historical source (albeit one cannot consider it entirely accurate).
