Bars

Can someone explain why bars are supposedly fun? I was tricked into going to one recently, I went for 30min and left immediately. I just don't understand how people can listen to Sweet Home Alabama every single time they go out...seriously in the past 7 years pretty much every time I've gone out I've heard that damn song. If it isn't classic rock, country or 80s music, it is some type of crappy pop music which makes my ears bleed. In addition, the music is so loud you have to scream. I don't know maybe it's just me but bars are not fun and I really wish I could understand why people go and most importantly how do you get people to pay to go to a bar and listen to the same thing over and over and over again...

Sounds like you're just going to the wrong bar.

Clubs here are gay and theres to many mexicans. I prefer the bars here where theres a juke box, boarded up windows, seat less toilets, and a 50% chance to get thrown out head first out the door by some 300lb redneck or some dirty biker but the end of the night.

I'm not a drinker which is why I don't think they are fun.

monkey bars are cool but i'm too big for them and tae for SURE lounges are better but most people i know dont like them and hate clubs even more...can't hang out with them, hurts my ears

imo, bars are great for hanging with your buddies and just shooting the breeze. lounges, etc for other purposes. if you're going into a bar expecting more, then you'll probably be disappointed.

Bars are the only alternative to shitty clubs if you live where I live (Saskatoon, SK, Canada ). Here, clubs equate to bigger bars - still can't hear anyone over the noise, the music sucks gorilla balls, and the purpose of going is to get drunk and score, which is why clubs here are so strongly associated with the meat market, making most attendees male. It does attract the gay population, though .

I'm so glad I'm moving to Waterloo (1 hour from Toronto) by next term!

Bars are for weak people who need an excuse to hit on other people. I'm right there with ya. I only have fun at bars if I stick with a group (3+) friends and get wasted. Otherwise I realized what is around me and leave.

You'll find Waterloo actually has a number of decent clubs depending on what you're into.

I like dive bars. I usually go to one with a few friends and we are friends with the bartenders too, so its like hangin out out with the whole group. Saturday nights the usually have a band too. I dont use them as places to pick up women, just a social thing between friends.

meh doesn't seem like there are good reasons to go to a stereotypical bar.

I play at a bar on Wednesdays and maybe it's cos it's Miami,
but all they want is hip hop/ crunk/ punk rock
the crowd is mixed as hell: 20-somethings to a 50-something fat,
local white guy, that knows every word to 2Pac songs
so it's the crowd that drives the night at a bar..

oh yeah, and the bathroom sounds like mini-vacuums going off every 20 minutes

i enjoy clubs, but bars bore me. lounges are great to go to with a few friends but id much rather go to a sushi bar.

oh and wtf is this "monkey bar" thing?

Bars are fun if you go with the right people.

I agree with this statement.

Bars are for weak people? I didn't realize wanting to unwind and have a few drinks after a long day and shoot the proverbial breeze made me weak. Whatever, I'm weak then. Like L.E.N. said, I just go to socialize with friends.


In any event, how are you in Manhattan and can't find another decent bar? Dive bars, lounges, preppy bars, rooftop bars, complete shitholes, the bar your friend bartends at... Really if you can't find a decent bar that you enjoy in new york city maybe drinking and socializing just isn't for you.
