Gareth Emery

I think this guy is definitely on fire at the moment. His new tracks and remixes are great, like never before. Especially that remix of Orkidea - Metaversa, which is not released yet, his remix of Alex Bartlett & Martin Roth - Off the world is great, This is that - his new own track is such a fantastic. Gareth's sets are amazing as well...

So, what do you think about him? Is he going to be one of the leaders in trance music in 2008?

I highly doubt that.

Posted by isoterra on Mar-21-2008 10:16:

i think he's a better dj than he is a producer. his productions aren't *bad* but are seldom mindblowing either

solid dj though, good ear for quality music & knows how to craft sets properly

Excluding GTR - Mistral, none of his works has caught my attention.

Posted by a98 on Mar-21-2008 13:35:

definitely my favourite producer atm! and actually one of the only (if not the only) producers in uplifting trance i still find interesting.

it amazes me that people who complain trance being generic still bash emery, though he's tracks are one of the less generic tracks in uplifting genre. lots of elements from the oldskool sound (like acid lines and similar stabs and fx) combined with modern style trance with hints of progressive and even electro (yikes!).

his tracks are always really detailed, with a great hook melody and the overall sound is just fresh and pleasant to listen. one of the best technical producers around, his production skills amazing me more and more everyday.

Mistral is probably his best, closely followed by Flood Control. He needs to go back to producing his old stuff.

if you take that sentence literally it sounds kinda weird

bouncebackability is my fav from him, really simple track but has so much power to it, that bassline fucking kills on a big system

I dont know who will. all I can think of are trance veterans like solar stone and micro de govia

dunno if you've seen the tracklist for the new Solar Stone album but more than half of the tracks are vocal tracks. So I doubt Solar Stone will do any wonders. What we can expect is a cheese fest more or less.

Orkidea - Metaverse remix is so far best track I've heard from him, also favourite tunes for me so far this year. Mistral & Formentera What remix being other favs.. but I haven't heard that much from him. I do like his style, it's well produced mixture of progressive & trance.

Let's see what the rest of the year brings.

He said that 95% of trance out there is shit didn't he? He's spot on, and it starts with him.

Vinny Troia Presents Jaidene Veda - Flow (Gareth Emery Remix) / (Gareth Emery Dub)

Those two are so good!

There are other tracks of his i don't mind listening to and others that i don't find very interesting at all.

well that's a matter of taste ofcourse, but to give few examples:

stowers & young - the second coming remix:
http://users.kymp.net/anssi.hohti/c...econdcoming.mp3
very mysterious oldskoolish vibe in this one, but it's masked with this modern electroish bassline.

interlok (with bennison):
http://users.kymp.net/anssi.hohti/clips/interlok.mp3
even slightly psyish influenced sound in this techy track, probably mostly because nicholas, but still.

another you, another me (with lange):
http://users.kymp.net/anssi.hohti/c...ouanotherme.mp3
again the electro bassline covers some amazing backgrounds, really nice synths back there. followed with that gorgeous uplifting melody.

metaverse remix:
http://users.kymp.net/anssi.hohti/clips/metaverse.mp3
really nice relaxing classy overall sound in this one

i'm not saying he's the saviour of trance or the most original artist ever, but definitely among the few artist that have their own sound and don't sound like all the armada/discover/anjunabeats material out there.
what makes him so good for me is the great riffs and overall very well produced sound that is just very pleasant to listen to.

That one is very nice. It's similar to the remix of Flow.

I had only heard Interok out of those. And yes, as you said yourself, that track sounds more Bennison than Gareth Emery.
The other tracks were nothing that special.
Another You Another Me sounded interesting in the start but that overly mellow break just destroys it. Going from some nice acid riffs to that kind of cheeky break is too much for me.

I'm not saying that he is a bad producer. I just don't think that his productions are that unique in any kind of way. The fact that all his productions are hammered by the very Anjuna, Armada and Discover DJs proves where he belongs.

+1

It seems to be a trend among the popular trance DJs and producers of today, just take Armin bashing DJ Sammy for his work, then turning around and churning out "Going Wrong"... yeah good job.

I wouldnt say leading but definetly climbing the ranks if you ask me

They all sound okay, but since they are not uplifting at all they are not very interesting to me.
I think I love a strong beat.

Music can only interest you if it's uplifting?

No, but in general I do like a strong beat in it. I listen most Trance in my car going to and from my work. Since I think there are enough tracks I like that meet my demands I skip many others. Also I listen to the A.S.O.T. sessions in my car and noticed I simply like the uplifting tracks most.

The perfect example is:
Majera - Velvet Sun (Aly & Fila Remix)

A beautiful track, great piano, not that uplifting, but a very strong beat. Although I like the original version too.

Posted by THE_Chris on Mar-21-2008 22:09:

Velvet Sun is a guilty pleasure of mine but only the original. Aly & Fila mix is terrible in comparison.
