my back hurts really, really bad.

my upper back has been hurting really bad for the past day. getting up this morning was absolutely horrible. i made the mistake of going outside for a brief moment to carry something into the truck (wasn't heavy so i don't think it's the result of that) but i wasn't necessarily wearing warm clothes, only a long sleeve shirt. i'm starting to think that i'm sick or something. nothing else hurts, no coughing, nothing compared to being normally sick.

am i sick? with aids? possible? no not with aids. tbills?

Describe the pai - does it stay in the center of the back around the spine, or radiate out? Any numbess / tingling in the arms or legs or neck? Does the pain run down to your lower back and into the pelvis and legs? Is it a throbbing pain or a sharp stabbing pain?

Reason I ask is that depending on the symptons it can be ruled as musculaoskeletal pain or nerve pain. In both cases you should see a doctor.

As for me, I'm on Mobic for my back pain which is skeletal pain, which comes from carrying around 90 pounds of combat gear all day. There are drugs and therapies that can help, don't get to discouraged ok buddy? I know how depressed you can get when the pain is so severe you can't do your job. I was pulled of patrols for 3 days I was FURIOUS, my mates going out and me not able to watch their backs. Remember, it does not take much to injure your back, yu could have pinched a nerve lifitng the object you were carrying, weight doesn't always matter. Just make sure that you see a doc if it worsens or doesn't improve shortly. Also remember that back injuries and pain are very common now a days, even in young folks. Take it easy and see a doc, take some Ibuprofen or Naproxen for the pain, but NOT together as they will cancel eachother out, until you can see a doc. Also try a heating pad that may help alleviate the inflamation and pain, if only a little.

Hope I helped man!

have you exerted yourself in the past few days? Also, define upper back.....does this include your shoulders? and how far does the pain extend down your back? Is the pain worse when you cough? Does it hurt to look up or down? and if so, which is worse?

Posted by jupiterone on Mar-25-2008 22:34:

it's mellowed out a bit right now but still is hurting and kind of making it a bit harder to breathe. doesn't spread and it's from the shoulders to the middle of the spine. my shoulders do not hurt. not as bad as it was this morning though

edit: it only hurts worse when i look down, when i look up there is no pain.

Considering your symptoms, I'd say it's probably lupus.

Have you seen a chiropractor? Sounds like you pulled a muscle or pinched a nerve. That or you lack functional strength and you need to start working out.

Ok sounds the same as my problem - my back pain worsens when I have to bend over (like getting out of a humvee or ducking thru a narrow door). Its most likely NOT a pinched nerve, because certain movemenets - eg, breathing and moving the head - aggravate the pain, and, you say it does not radiate outwards, but stays centered on the spine, so this sounds liek classic skeletal muscular pain. If it was nerve related pain, you would more than likely feel numbness or tinglin in the limbs, and the pain would radiate into your limbs. So still see a doc before this gets really bad. Don't do what I did and keep ignoring it ok? I had my medic give me torridol just so I could do my job but eventually I couldn't take the pain. Don't ignore pain or it will get progressively worse. See a doc bro.

EDIT
Heres what my medic says
"Pain is your body saying HEY JACKASS!!! STOP DOING STUPID SHIT AND SEE A DOC!!!"
